Launch startup items as hidden

Since upgrading to Ventura, from Monterey, none of the login/startup items that were set to be hidden after startup, are hidden. All apps still launch at startup, but all of their windows are visible, where in previous OS's, the few I had set to 'Hide' at launch/startup were running, but their windows were unseen. I can't seem to find a way to set these items to be hidden at startup, the 'HIDE' checkbox in so longer in System prefs/Settings. Anyone know how I can get this function back? OR - did they justs do away with it?
