Can't get rid of VPN Connection window

Hi,

Our iMac running 10.13.6 has three user accounts, one for each member of the family, and since I started using ProtonVPN the other two accounts are getting this message.

It can't be dismissed, reappearing after clicking cancel. And internet access is blocked.

The message only appears if I'm not logged in and even then not always.

I've checked both user account's Network Preferences and Keychain Access to confirm they have no VPN related configurations stored.

The message itself is confusing: Is it asking for their login password? Their VPN password which they don't have!? My VPN password?

This last possibility doesn't make any sense, since I've discovered OS X doesn't allow VPNs to run system wide for all user accounts.

Any advice or solutions appreciated.

Besides uninstalling the VPN...

System Preferences>Network>choose interface>Advanced>Proxies Tab, make sure none are set, like for HTTP & HTTPS.

You already know how: remove the VPN app, or contact the VPN app vendor.

Uninstall the VPN unless it is required for a point-to-point secure tunnel to your workplace network. If it is required by your workplace, contact the VPN Administrator and ask for assistance configuring the client.

Add-on first-few-hops VPNs are massively overhyped, solve a problem that hasn’t been a problem for a decade (particularly with DoH and DoT that’s now available via iCloud+), don’t provide appreciably better security due to widely-known credentials (the existing tunnel remains secure, the add-on second tunnel provided by the VPN is itself weak), and do centralize your traffic for ease of personalized tracking and monitoring (and various no-logging VPNs have later been caught logging when their “non-existent” logs leaked).

If you have specific requirements for geoshifting for app or web service testing, and/or for what the VPNs claim to provide, then Streisand and Algo are options as those allow you to host the server when and where you need it, and to better control what (if anything) gets logged. Or iCloud+ with DoT and DoH and private relay, of course.

Put differently, get rid of the VPN.
