Photos alternatives for macbook (don't get angry yet, I know this is endlessly discussed online)

I have specific needs and have found Photos very frustrating and non intuitive to work with. As an example, I just wanted to compare two different photos, and was unable to open them both. Another example, it took me forever to figure out how to get my sidebar back when not in full screen.

Anyway, I am looking for (preferably) free alternatives to Apple Photos, but when I do searches, I must not be wording them well, because I can't refine my search to get what I want:

I do NOT use icloud. I store everything on my laptop or on hard drives.

I don't do any editing other than basic cropping or resizing for emails.

I don't store photos on my phone, I transfer them to my laptop and delete them from my phone.

I would love to be able to find and delete duplicates that have accumulated over the many years.

I want to be able to look through my photos and enjoy them, email them occasionally, put them into albums, change the names of photos.

Does this exist? I feel like Photos just kind of sucks and there must be better options. Or maybe I just need to learn how to use Photos better? I would appreciate advice on any of this. Thanks.

The current version of Photos, v8, released with OS Ventura, includes duplicate management. Earlier versions require a 3rd part app - the best of which is PowerPhotos. https://www.fatcatsoftware.com/powerphotos/

Picasa was free but fell victim to Google's propensity to dropping apps after a few years. They seem to get bored with them. Their replacement is Google Photos - which is all Cloud.

No version of Photos allows comparison side-by-side.

Cheap or good - take your pick.

There are no free alternatives that (IMO) are worth wasting time on getting to work the way you want. Cost is not just monetary - you pay in time invested to learn and set up, and ongoing in (lack of) usability. You get exactly what you pay for. Apple photos is far ahead of any free alternatives.

Paid alternatives:

Lightroom

Luminar

Capture one

On1

There are some others I can't think of right now.

OK, so maybe that's why my searches don't come up with any useful results. There are none.

I recall years ago when there were apps like Picassa that were free and supposedly were very good, but iphoto seemed to do about everything I needed at that time.

Maybe I need to learn more about how to use Photos on the Mac. Any suggestions on a good website to learn how to use it more effectively?

I just don't see many options under preferences and the various menu headings, so I must be missing something that would allow me to do the things I want to do, like eliminate dupes, and look at two photos side by side.

I've been using Macs since the 80's, so I have familiarity, but maybe I'm just getting old<g>
