Since upgrading to Ventura my MacBook has stopped talking to my Epson XP-640

I can still print to the XP-640 from my iPad and iPhone using AirPrint. But after removing the printer from the Mac and reinstalling it, it still won’t talk to the Mac. I’ve checked drivers and firmware on the Epson are up to date. Anyone else got this problem?

Hi,

Since the Epson XP-640 is an AirPrint model, you should be able to print from the Mac as well without the need for additional drivers, provided that the Mac is connected to the same network (Wi-Fi router) as the printer, the iPad, and the iPhone.

Generally speaking, if there is a problem with device/computer discovery in connection with AirPrint, the following power-cycle procedure can be used (in this order, with these waiting times): Power off the Wi-Fi router, the printer, the Mac computer, the iPad, the iPhone, and all other devices/computers. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the router. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the printer. Wait a minute or two. Power on the Mac. Then power on the iPad and the iPhone. Finally, power on all other devices/computers.

Thank you.

The Epson XP-640 is working in the 2.4 GHz band.

See page 251 in the manual at https://files.support.epson.com/docid/cpd5/cpd51727.pdf .

See also page 206:

"Note: If you are using a 5 GHz wireless router, set the router to operate in dual band (2.4 GHz and

5 GHz) mode. If your router uses a single network name (SSID) for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band,

give each band its own network name (SSID) instead, such as Home Network 2.4 GHz and Home

Network 5 GHz. See your router documentation or contact your internet service provider for

instructions."

Thank you for the information.

Since neither the Mac nor the iPhone/iPad can find the printer, one would have to suspect either the router or the printer. Since the iPhone and iPad worked before, the router would be my main suspect. I assume that the router was powered off as well.

Was the Mac now added to use AirPrint only?

Did you remove the printer drivers from the Mac?

Did you reset the printing system?

Just to check, are the iPad and iPhone using "plain" AirPrint (that is, not using a special app from the printer manufacturer or a third party)?

Has anything been done to the Wi-Fi setup? Some modern (dual band) routers can be problematic due to "smart" device detection.

The printer should be wirelessly connected to the Wi-Fi router. Wi-Fi direct (or a similar setup with the printer acting as a server) should not be used.

Any information about the exact Wi-Fi router model (please do not post serial numbers or access codes)?

You may want to check all Wi-Fi settings and, again, go through the whole power-cycle procedure.

Many thanks Jan for your help. Before following the steps you recommended both the iPad and the iPhone could print to the XP-640 using AirPrint. The Mac couldn't. I then followed all your steps carefully and tried again. This time neither the IPad nor the iPhone could find the AirPrint XP-640 and there was no change with the Mac. It still can't find the XP-640. All devices are connected to the same network.

Was the Mac now added to use AirPrint only?/ Yes

Did you remove the printer drivers from the Mac?/No

Did you reset the printing system?/Yes earlier- but not this time around

Just to check, are the iPad and iPhone using "plain" AirPrint (that is, not using a special app from the printer manufacturer or a third party)?/Yes

Has anyting been done to the Wi-Fi setup? Some modern (dual band) routers can be problematic due to "smart" device detection.?/Nothing done to the WiFi system, but to be sure I have been through setting it up once again. Report states that "the same SSID may be set on several access points. Check the settings on the access points and change the SSID." (I fear this doesn't make a lot of sense to me.)

Any information about the exact Wi-Fi router model (please do not post serial numbers or access codes)?/The router is branded BT (I'm in the UK). No indication of who actually made it.
