macOS Ventura: external display resolution issue

I got these types of problems as well some time/weeks (not immediately!?) after upgrading to Ventura 13.1 (I didn't have any issues with 13.0) on my M1 work laptop (2021 16" MacBook Pro). The problem got resolved by plugging in my personal 2019 16" MacBook Pro running Monterey 12.6.1 and thereafter plugging in the M1 again. I then got the options to chose between 5 different high to low res options (i.e. not the long list of multiple options I used to have when running Monterey), and it works just fine switching back and forth among these.

I'm using an Elgato dock which I connect via USB-C to the laptop, and a Dell S3221QS 4K monitor which I connect via DisplayPort to the dock.

THAT WORKED FOR ME! I switched to mirroring and then changed the "optimize for" setting from my MacBook to the external display. That caused the external display to flash on and off, coming back on with the expected clarity.

Ugh, never mind. It only lasts as long as I'm mirroring my display and don't change my display settings 😩

Ventura 13.1 - I have two identical 5k displays (both recognized as LG HDR 5k) driven on two separate USB-C Thunderbolt Ports of Mac Studio.

In System Settings > Displays >

The main display offers highest resolution of 5120 x 2160 (native)

The extended display only offers highest resolution of 3840 x 2160 (not native) - why no 5k setting?

Related to all the other posts - This appears to be a bug in Ventura. Please can you fix it?

Still not fixed. Sometimes I can select the right resolution for 4k and other times the option is simply not there and it's just low resolution. I was hoping the OS update would fix it but no luck there.

This is too widespread with different monitor makes and models to go to monitor manufacturers.. I'm having similar issues with a 4k 27'' LG at home, and a superwidescreen Samsung 43'' in the office. What worked flawlessly, now no longer works.

I agree. It really is pretty awful though that an M1 MacBook is struggling to send a high definition screen resolution to a 4k monitor. I’m finding that once in a while it miraculously seems to be able to do it and the rest of the time it’s low resolution. I’ve even just purchased an Apple thunderbolt cable to see if that would solve it (my external monitor has an HDMI cable that connects to a Uni Union Hub), but it’s had no effect.

Please Apple, get a fix out for this. It worked fine prior to Ventura.

Same issue here, have tried everything mentioned here but no joy. Hoping for an update that fixes it. It seems to have worked properly a couple of times so hoping it's a bug. External display is unusable for design work until this is fixed.

Full HDTV (Thomson 48FU4243) on a M1 MM via HDMI, the display detection is F****d up on display re-activation, then backdrops to an ugly 1360x768 res.

I was requested to update to Ventura by Apple Support to solve another bug on Monterey that is still on Ventura…

Same issue, well similar, related.

My Samsung G9 is running at lower resolution (doesn't offer full 5140 as an option) and has a horrible screen flicker sometimes on RHS depending on what tab happens to be open. I don't get the option to upscale, even.

This happened immediately after the update.

Interestingly, I can set the full resolution again when I'm working in Immersed (VR) on Quest2.

I can change the resolution from VR, put my headset down and continue working in normal reslution on the G9.

.. until I exit Immersed in VR, then it switches back on the physical G9 again!

Maybe this will provide Apple a clue though?

I have a bit similar problem with display but it is not about resolution.

I use Satechi adapter and when I plug it in the laptop (MacBook Pro 16 M1 Pro) gets a new display in settings. Some "ghost" screen. However devices plugged in the adapter work good. Do you have any idea where is the problem?

same issue. Safe mode doesn't work.
