macOS Ventura: external display resolution issue

Hi

I updated to Ventura yesterday (from Big Sur) and now I can only 'upscale' to higher resolutions on my 4K external monitor. I can choose the higher resolutions (e.g. 2560 x 1440) but it looks fuzzy, not sharp. It was working perfectly before I updated. The monitor is a 27" Viewsonic vp2756-4K, which has the following spec: Resolution: 3840 x 2160, Resolution Type: UHD, Refresh Rate (Hz): 60.

I'm connecting to the monitor via HDMI cable run through an Anker 533 USB-C Hub (5-in-1, Slim) which, as I said, was working perfectly until the OS update.

See display options below:

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this, please?

Thanks 🙂

This is strange, but I toggled around the display settings by setting the external display as the main display, then as a mirrored display and then back to extended display and suddenly a lot more resolution options appeared, some with better sharpness.

THAT WORKED FOR ME! I switched to mirroring and then changed the "optimize for" setting from my MacBook to the external display. That caused the external display to flash on and off, coming back on with the expected clarity.

Ugh, never mind. It only lasts as long as I'm mirroring my display and don't change my display settings 😩

I had this same problem which wasted my time for a couple hours trying to figure out. Similar (less than ideal) solution as someone else posted, I ended up buying a new usb-c hub to connect my Philips monitor to my M1 Air, using HDMI, which worked perfectly on Big Sur before I updated to Ventura last weekend. My Anker 6-in-1 A8365 wouldn't give me high resolution display, my cheap alternative https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07YWWZJ65/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 does work - I use this one in my office with no problems so was confident it would work with my home monitor and thankfully it does. Really not a great solution, but I couldn't sit around and wait for a fix from Apple....

I got these types of problems as well some time/weeks (not immediately!?) after upgrading to Ventura 13.1 (I didn't have any issues with 13.0) on my M1 work laptop (2021 16" MacBook Pro). The problem got resolved by plugging in my personal 2019 16" MacBook Pro running Monterey 12.6.1 and thereafter plugging in the M1 again. I then got the options to chose between 5 different high to low res options (i.e. not the long list of multiple options I used to have when running Monterey), and it works just fine switching back and forth among these.

I'm using an Elgato dock which I connect via USB-C to the laptop, and a Dell S3221QS 4K monitor which I connect via DisplayPort to the dock.

I hope this helps 🤷

This is the only thing that has worked for me. THANK YOU! Ultimately, we noticed that through the dock with the HDMI the monitor wasn't reading it as 5k and causing the blur. Going USB-C from monitor to dock and then USB-C from dock to laptop has worked PERFECTLY. Reads it accurately. Not sure why the disconnect with HDMI/Adaptor to dock, but this "fixes" it. All I need for now! Thank you!

Ventura 13.1 - I have two identical 5k displays (both recognized as LG HDR 5k) driven on two separate USB-C Thunderbolt Ports of Mac Studio.

In System Settings > Displays >

The main display offers highest resolution of 5120 x 2160 (native)

The extended display only offers highest resolution of 3840 x 2160 (not native) - why no 5k setting?

Related to all the other posts - This appears to be a bug in Ventura. Please can you fix it?

Glad I found this thread ... I've always used an HDMI to USB-C adapter with my 27" LG 4K HDR monitor, and everything was great until Ventura 13.1

Knowing it was a software issue, I opted to install BetterDisplay.

I made the following changes under Settings > Displays:

Configuration Override: Edit the system configuration of this display

Resolution Scaling: Setup native smooth resolution scaling

Add custom scaled resolutions (enter 2560x1440)

Note: the custom resolution I entered was necessary to get 1440p working again; please don't skip this.

Finally, I rebooted my machine and could select 2560x1440 in HiDPI!

I can see the various scale options under the native Display settings again too.

I hope this helps someone out there.
