Ventura 13 Power Events

Recent Upgrade to Ventura 13. Noticed in About this Mac, More Info, System Report, Power, there are Power Events showing suggesting Wake ups at certain times shown below. These did not occur in Monterey. Any thoughts?

In the meantime I found a solution to get rid of the power events. By "I found" I mean actually I found this thread:

Reminders app waking mac from sleep - Apple Community

So I tried it!

Behaviour before the fix:

  • "pmset -g sched" reports our beloved friends

[0] wake at 12/17/2022 00:41:44 by 'com.apple.alarm.user-visible-

com.apple.CalendarNotification.EKTravelEngine.periodicRefreshTimer'.

  [1] wake at 12/17/2022 19:23:54 by 'com.apple.alarm.user-visible-com.apple.acm

  • "sudo pmset schedule cancelall"
  • "pmset -g sched" -> all good!
  • put Mac to sleep
  • wake it up by keystroke
  • "pmset -g sched" -> bad again

Now the fix:

"sudo pmset sched cancelall"

AND

"sudo chflags schg /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist"

"This prevents the system from updating the file and my MacBook no longer wakes to reminder events. Needles to mention that it prevents all scheduled system events like sleep, power-on and such."

"I recommend removing the flag before a system update:"

"sudo chflags noschg /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist"

Behaviour AFTER the fix:

  • "pmset -g sched" -> all good!
  • put Mac to sleep
  • wakeup Mac by keystroke
  • "pmset -g sched" -> all good and hope it remains as it is...

Will see tomorrow what "pmset -g log" reports...

Good luck to all...

Exact same issue.

pmset -g log | grep "Wake Requests"

is littered with:

Let me be the first to say thanks for writing all the above, and I'll give it a try later.

Thing is, I (or I think I could speak for all of us) didn't change anything in the settings since upgrade to Ventura. I would note I never even knew about those Power Events until digging around about battery drain. It probably is affecting everyone, but they just don't know it (talking about regular consumer).

As for the image you posted, no, on new macs there is not Power Nap. And the other settings, yes I've turned everything off if possible. We just want the computer to sleep and do NOTHING.

Last night I closed all apps, and did

sudo pmset schedule cancelall

just before sleeping (with 100%), and wake up 7 hours later with 93%.

This morning first thing I did was:

pmset -g log | grep -e " Sleep -e " Wake " | tail -n 50

And got this:

Sorry if it's too much.

As for my situation, it seems to indicate bluetooth, and the AppleSDXC. So I guess I have to unplug everything?

Here's my battery status. As you can see, it's slow, but it just drops after few hours. Some weekends when I'm not using the computer and it stays asleep all weekend, I'd expect it to be at least 90% but it's more like 30-40%.

As for the Power Events, if anyone know if it's because of a slider we have on/off let us know so we could stop the drain. Thanks!

I have the same exact issue. However, these issues were occurring way before Ventura (Big Sur & Monterey). I read up on a few forums and the only [temporary] solution is to input a 'command' in the Terminal app. The two commands that have worked for me are:

1) sudo pmset schedule cancelall

2) sudo pmset -b tcpkeepalive 0

Hope this helps!

The fact that only you four are reporting the problem it probably isn't envy on Apple's radar.

Do you have these enabled in Settings?

Have you installed and run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac?

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Yes, seen this being discussed in other places. I don't think it's this draining but I could be wrong.

Right now, our main suspects are:

com.apple.alarm.user-visible-com.apple.CalendarNotification.EKTravelEngine.periodicRefreshTimer

and

com.apple.alarm.user-visible-com.apple.acmd.alarm

Can someone please explain what they are doing in the Power Events?

I see CalendarNotifications/RefreshTimer, and I thought it was because some accounts were doing Refresh Calendars: Push, but for Gmail it was timed so I made it Manually to try it out but nothing change. Nothing change as in still wakes from sleep and draining.

The second, no clue.

com.apple.alarm.user-visible-com.apple.CalendarNotification.EKTravelEngine.periodicRefreshTimer

My only guess is it relates to calendar events with travel notifications set. That may wake the computer to refresh the time to depart. I tried to create an event with a travel time alert, but it didn't generate any wake events.

com.apple.alarm.user-visible-com.apple.acmd.alarm

I couldn't find anything on the internet or in my logs that referenced acmd.

You should be able to cancel them all using pmset in Terminal

pmset schedule cancel wake

or

pmset repeat cancel

None of these should be waking the Mac permanently. The wake events are to accomplish some task then let it go back to sleep. It is possible that whatever kicks on gets hung up and drains the battery, but that is not the intent of the wake events, so the scheduled wake events should not be the direct cause of any issues such as battery draining. If they always cause battery drain, use the Get Support links to talk to Apple support.

Nov 16, 2022 2:01 PM in response to Barney-15E

Interesting, and understood.

Well, for Calendar, I don't use it. There might be some holiday events, birthday dates scheduled but that's all.

And those commands do work, but as stated previously, some time later it appears again in the Power Events.

"..gets hung up and drains the battery.."

I only speak for my self here, but first thing from wake:

pmset -g log | grep -e " Sleep " -e " Wake " | tail -n 50

I see the words like Bluetooth and SDXC thrown a few times. For me, I have a thumb drive, monitor (sleep mode), and an SD card 24/7 connected. And like most, bluetooth on with keyboard/mouse. Should I eject everything and turn off bluetooth or something? Maybe I'll try that.

Nov 16, 2022 2:27 PM in response to Jun427

The calendar travel alarm I mentioned above was not set for my Mini which wasn't sleeping. However, I looked on my MBP and it had both the acmd alarm and the Travel Event set within the same hour.

I created several events on my Mini and it did not register any power events.

My MBP had entries for each alarm I created, and for the Travel alarms. The regular events were acmd.

The times didn't make any sense, though.

It also had about sixteen entries for a delayed email send I tested a while ago. They were all just duplicates.

My Mini has two wake events for my weekly CCC backups.

Nov 16, 2022 4:02 PM in response to Barney-15E

Well, (again, I speak for my self) I never even touched the Calendar app. It might synced some Holiday/Birthdays and I see it time to time in the Notification Center, but that's all.

I got this M1 MBP 14 in April, and I remember for a long time it was working fine. I still remember I had it on for 15 days once! But then all of a sudden I started seeing the drain on a random weekend I remembered.
