6 digit passcode after update

Hi... have had my 8plus for several years now with no problems. I recently updated to the latest iOS 16.1 about a week ago... did a hard reset today and the phone wants a 6 digit passcode. I have never set a 6 digit...only a four digit. Anybody have a clue what to do short of wiping it??
