My macbook air 2014 variant will not allow me to update IOS
I can't seem to be able to upgrade my IOS it is stuck on IOS 11. it won't show many up date either after searching for it.

Since you have a MacBook Air 2014 model, I am assuming you mean macOS since iOS is the OS used by the iPhone (many may still refer iOS to iPads as well, even though Apple narrowed iOS down to just iPhones a couple years ago with iPads having their OS technically called iPadOS).
Have you tried rebooting the laptop? Sometime a simple reboot can fix things. You can also try booting into Safe Mode in case some third party software is interfering with the normal operation of macOS (usual culprits are anti-virus apps, cleaning apps, and third party security software).
