Accents not appearing in Ventura

When I keep pressure on the e, a, o, u, and other keys, I no longer get the accent options as before.

I've tried several Terminal commands I found, such as defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true and then restarting did not work.

Any help would be appreciated!

I've had this problem and an Apple support advisor just solved it. Entering Terminal commands, resetting Keyboard shortcuts to default, and reinstalling Ventura did not work. What DID work was, in the settings for Keyboard, setting the Key repeat rate all the way to Fast, and setting the Delay until repeat all the way to Short -- in other words, setting both control all the way to the right. That worked immediately, no restart required.

What keyboard / keyboard localization is this...

Can you verify Full keyboard access did not get turned on...

>System Settings>Accessibility>

Verify uninstall third party Anti-virus for example —>esp Webroot

Uninstall all third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/Anti-Virus/VPN

all known to cause issues on the macOS

I went to your discussion link and left the following comment:

I was having the same problem. Thanks to some suggestions from Tom Gewecke and Leroy Douglas, I was able to solve the problem (I hope permanently) by doing the following:

System Settings -> Keyboard Turn on Sticky Keys.
The click on the information icon and make sure everything if OFF.

I'm no tech guru but it is definitely working for me!

So it's the opposite for you. Romance/Germanic characters like ä, ö, ü, ç, ß etc. are built into the English keyboard. Just hold down option and type the accent character. You can display the Keyboard Viewer to see the other options. In the Keyboard Viewer, I can see that option-a is å. But that is something that I would have used press-and-hold for too.

Have you also played with the Key Repeat rate in system settings > keyboard > keyboard? It should not be on OFF and not too long. Also play with Delay

Which input source do you normally use, "US"?

This is a regular occurrence with each new macOS update.

I've tried several Terminal commands I found, such as defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true and then restarting did not work.

And I'm sure people will suggest several other "tricks" or "hacks" to get this to work. Don't bother with that. You are wasting your time. This "press-and-hold" method was invented for iOS. Many new Mac users don't realize that this is was never how the Mac worked and that there has always been an easier method.

In the spirit of wanting you never to waste any more time pressing and holding keys, I also don't want to re-type all this again. Please see my post here in this thread where I explain a brief overview: How to enable the accents in MacOS Ventur… - Apple Community

My point here is to save people time. The press-and-hold methods wastes your time. If I need to type a Norwegian character 2 or 3 times a year, it doesn't matter if I use press-and-hold or just pick it from the Emojis and Symbols viewer. But if I'm typing an entire document in French, the press-and-hold method is going to add at least 3 seconds for each accented, non-English character I type.

And that is assuming press-and-hold is working properly. It hasn't ever not worked for me. But these questions are always the same "I upgraded to Big Sur and now the accents pop-up isn't working" (I guess this is where the Webroot idea came from). So I assume that the user hadn't already changed a bunch of keyboard settings. If you had, then obviously changing them back is the first course of action. Maybe going through each keyboard setting in accessibility, keyboard, and uninstalling all 3rd party antivirus or cleanup apps will work too. But even if it all works, all you get eventually is the opportunity to waste more of your time.

So I say, use the fast and easy option that never fails. Then, when you do need to type something in Bokmål, you can with it then.

I normally use "U.S." input, but have both Swedish and Icelandic installed.

When the bug appeared, whenever I hold on a key (such as "a" (with the US keyboard)), the accent menu actually pops up briefly after about half a second, but only with one character in it ("A" for the 'a' key, "O" for the 'o' key etc.), then disappears after another half second, and then the regular key starts repeating (e.g. "aaaaaaaa").

I did not touch the key repeat before the bug started appearing, but I did try out other settings and it did not help. Right now my Key repeat rates is on one down from Fast (7/8), and the Delay until repeat is on the left middle option (3/6) - just like in Gary's image from November 2nd.

While the point you make is correct, they represent a way to do things that you prefer. I am trilingual and have multiple keyboards setup. I know there's many way I can enter special diacritics, and that some are faster than others (my name actually contains an accent not "natively" on English keyboard).

The accent menu has been available to easy find special characters in macOS for years (if not over a decade) and is officially supported by apple (Enter characters with accent marks on Mac - Apple Support).

That does not change the fact that this thread is about trying to fix a common bug in Ventura, not trying to convince people to change the way they use their keyboard. It's great that we get (reminded) about alternative ways while the bug is still in place.

That said, I am also experiencing the bug, and I do not have Webroot nor Lifelock installed. Turning on the Full Keyboard Access in Accessibility settings does not fix it for me either, and neither does setting the defaults (as suggested in the original post), so I'm still looking for fixes!

As you can see, my settings pane looks identical. I currently run Norton LifeLock and CleanMyMac X. These have not previously caused problems. Should I temporarily uninstall them? I do not have Webroot.

UPDATE: I just enabled Sticky Keys and I now get the accents. Unfortunately, I'm getting some other things, such as an arrow and click whenever I hit the shift key. That will annoy me to no end!

2nd UPDATE: turned off the sound and the display. Things "appear" to be back to normal.

Thank you etresoft for sharing this wisdom. I am Portuguese and having used macs with the US keyboard for decades, I am very familiar with the method you describe. When Apple introduced the iOS method to the mac it was obvious to me that I did NOT want it, so I quickly learned to do

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool FALSE

on every mac I use.

As you say, a LOT of time saved, and a lot less opportunity for RSI to my wrist.
