14 pro max / Messages do not load, iCloud back up failed.

Hi, I am asking this in regard of my boyfriend's phone. We got iPhone 14 pro max together, and his phone is having issues. This is his first time using iPhone, he switched to iPhone from Android.

the issues are;

the messages do not load, every time he receives a new text from iPhone users, the old text disappeared. It is annoying because, if someone is sending him 3 text in a roll, he could only see the last one or not seeing any at all. He does not have this issue with Android user, his phone kept all the messages from Android user which is weird.
We also think it has something to do with his iCloud. We tried to back up his iCloud, even though he has free space, when he back up, it said his storage is full.

He went back to Verizon and they reset the phone for him and updated to ios16.1, and it didn't fix the issue. We also went to Apple store as well, and they said the same thing, to do hard reset on the phone, and to back up the phone. And he tried everything online, tweaking his setting around, resetting the phone, trying to back up again and again, and nothing works.

It sounds like there are a couple of things going on here and we'd be happy to discuss this with you further. It's possible that what is on the iPhone now won't fit into 5GB iCloud Storage. You can check by going through the steps here: Manage your iCloud storage - Apple Support

"Reduce the size of your iCloud Backup

When you back up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iCloud, the most important information on your device is backed up automatically. Learn more about what iCloud backs up.

Many apps automatically back up to iCloud after you install them. You can decrease the size of your iCloud Backup and free up space in iCloud when you stop backing up apps that you don't use or delete old iCloud backups.

Choose which apps to back up on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
Tap Manage Account Storage or tap Manage Storage, then tap Backups.
Tap the name of the device that you're using.
Turn off any apps that you don't want to back up.
Choose Turn Off & Delete.

When you confirm that you want to Turn Off & Delete an app, it turns off iCloud Backup for that app and removes all of its information from iCloud.

Some apps are always backed up and you can't turn them off."

As far as why the messages are not coming through, that could be due to a lack of storage on the iPhone itself. When your boyfriend got the new iPhone, was it set up as new or did he transfer over some of his data from his Android? Checking on the iPhone's internal storage might give you a clue as to what is happening.
