I just found out how to fix this from another site and it worked!
1) Go to Notifications --> Phone and turn OFF the Badge icon.
2) Verify that your voicemail is working by sending yourself a message from another phone and then deleting it. ( I skipped
this step and the process still worked)
3) Go back to Notifications--> Phone and turn the Badge icon back on.
4) Restart your phone, and the red circle should now be gone from your Phone icon.
Good luck!

I have the same issue on my iPhone 12. Since updating my iPhone 12 to ios16.1 I have a large red dot on the phone icon. I have no messages pending, no missed calls etc. Anyone know why or how I can get rid of it?
I tried all of the steps that SuuVee recommends including Step 2 and this did not resolve the issue for me. The Red Dot still appears with no messages pending, no missed calls etc.
Does anyonehave any additional suggestions for how I can get rid of it?
Thanks.
My solution that worked:
Call the offending phone and leave another voicemail. My Red dot disappeared after listening too and deleting the new voice message.
I try to listen the voicemail but it was didn’t have any voicemail but the red dot still appear it.
So annoying and unnecessary.
Me too
Very helpful and useful
Me too.
Same thing on our iPhone SE running 16.1.2
... and we chose NOT to have a voice mail, so there cannot be a voice message waiting.
And we cannot go and check if we have a voice mail message in the different procedures proposed because we dont have a voice mail.
I just received a “Bell” phone call that I deleted and then was sent a voice mail that is on Chinese then the blank red dot appeared on the phone icon. Article indicated a change only voicemail password or other nefarious possibilities.
solution please
Yes there is a bug. The red dot doesn’t display on the voice mail icon. It instead shows as a red dot on the phone with no number in the red dot. It you see this DO check your voicemail chances are you have one.
if you then delete your voicemail message the red dot disappears.
Bug fix soon PLEASE!
Thank you so much it did work 👍
Check and clear all your voicemails including saved ones.
Me too. Tried everything thats been suggested and its still there!
My dot has disappeared now that I have re- signed into my messaging/phone server. I can’t say if that is the answer, or if it just disappeared! Sorry, I can’t help you further.
Mine cleared after I dialed and listened to my voicemail messages, even though the voicemail icon in the bottom right corner didn’t show that there were messages pending.
Hey, I had the same issue after updating my iPhone 13; it cleared after listening to my voicemails
