Photos not syncing or uploading RAW files to iCloud.

Since I updated to Ventura, Photos app is not synching NEF (RAW) camera files with iCloud. It synchs JPG fine but not the RAW files. I've tried the hold control and command while starting photos and let it "fix" the library. No luck. I imported 3 RAW files from my camera (D500) today. IT is hung up on "synching 3 photos) and when I open these 3 photos in the app they show as blurry (unresolved). The photos are not blurry as when I edit them in another software they are fine.

Is the incompatibility between Photos Version 8.0 (511.0.180) and RAW files (and synching them to iCloud) a known issue that will be fixed?

Old Toad,

Thanks for the answer. Yes that is something we checked when the Apple guy was on the phone. My camera (Nikon D500) is on the list of supported models.

Here is an interesting development. Today I imported RAW file to test it again. Same thing, after a few hours nothing uploaded. for grins, I edited the photo (just clicked the auto edit icon) and then immediately clicked "Edit / Undo Edit". Guess what? Yep, it synched the file with iCloud in a matter of seconds.

This definitely seems to be a bug in the interface between Photos.app and iCloud. Monday I will relay this to Apple Support. If it is a bug, I hope they can fix it quickly. I use Photos a lot for my photography. About 300-1500 photos a week.

This solution worked for me, as I also had the problem where I was editing raw images before they got all uploaded to the icloud, then they remained stuck in 'unable to upload'. The solution worked immediately for some photos, but not all. For the remaining ones I individually had to open again in the editor, then they finally synced into icloud!

Thanks! This fixed the problem for me, and is the earliest post in the thread that concisely summarizes an easy way to apply the known workaround (select all, auto-enhance, undo). I would recommend other people on this thread that find this work-around helpful mark your post here as 'helpful' instead of only posting "that worked for me!" responses to it, so that others who come along don't have to search for this message.

Note that when I performed this trick, I went to my "Unsynced Photos" group, and did the select-all, since the fifty or so photos here were exactly the ones that exhibited the issue reported in this thread. When I did Image : Auto-Enhance to my group selection, they immediately sync'd to iCloud and therefore disappeared from the "Unsynced Photos" group, before I had a chance to perform the "UNDO" action!

I was then worried that I would have to hunt down the fifty or so photos amongst all the others and select them back into a selection group, so that I could then apply the "un-do auto enhance"... but it turns out just performing an Edit : Undo Auto Enhance did the trick, and saved me the hassle. Just FYI.

Just confirming this issue here with Nikon and Panasonic RAW images: I want to be able to edit them immediately after they are imported on my macBook, even before they are uploaded to iCloud. I'm often shooting on location without internet connection and this completely breaks my workflow. If this behavior is a "feature" as mentioned somewhere in this thread, it is an opaque and counter-productive quirk that I'd like to see removed sooner rather than later.

I'm on 13.4.1. It has been an issue since the day I installed Ventura and continues to be an issue to this day. Even though I have an open ticket, Apple has stopped answering my requests for updates to the ticket. I somehow doubt if they are going to fix this in Ventura. Hopefully it will be addressed in whatever comes next.

I am beyond disappointed with Apple's lack of progress on this issue and their lack of responsiveness to those of us who are experiencing it. As much as I dislike Adobe, I may have to move to Lightroom for cataloguing my photos if the next Mac OS doesn't fix the issue.

I’ve been having the same issue. Already posted separately about it. Tried the “auto enhance” work around and that did not work for me (Nikon D5100). But, I did find something interesting in a different post. In Photos, select the library and scroll all the way to the bottom for sync information. My said it was “paused”. Why? Who knows, since everything else syncs flawlessly. I selected the Sync option and voila, RAW photos now available!
