Can Apple add some kind of progress indicator to the process of syncing? I've been waiting on "Syncing photos (step 6 of 6) - waiting for items to copy" for 45 minutes. I'd just like to know if I need to wait or just shut everything down and try again. I've got a new MacBook Pro with M2 processor, 1TB SSD and a iPhone 12 mini with 256g space, 90 of which is available. Thank you.

I'm not sure what you're syncing or what the heck Step 6 could be. Are you syncing pictures to an iPhone or a Mac from iCloud? If so, that could well take days. Don't sit and stare at it.
