Photo Album Index has been Out Of Order for a long time

I decided quite awhile ago to put the date of my albums ahead of the subject, but those are also out of whack. I've looked through the last forum on this subject and while there was a good suggestion about arranging albums by year with sub-albums in that year, it still does not address the problem.

If you right-click (or two-finger click or control-click) on a folder, you can see at the bottom an option to sort.

I choose Name. But the thing is, you have to label the albums with Year Month Day for it to make sense. I sometimes use the day, but for most cases just year and month and event name is good enough.

Wow! That totally worked. I had no idea and the previous post (that I re-opened) had no such advice. I chose Newest First and regardless of whether or not I dated the folder, they all just fell into place. Thank-you so much for that, however, it punctuated another concern I've had lately which is seeing grayed out photos in that app. I thought it was just a handful (not a small one), but now I see lots of albums that are empty. Here is the list that all floated up to the top because they are the oldest, I guess and therefore the app is highlighting them in the Sort mode. Missing Albums are my greatest worry.

Happy that solved your problem! You sure did!

Are you thinking that pictures that used to be in these albums are lost? Yes

Have you checked the Library for January 25, 2018? Or used search? Yes

You can set up a smart album with a date range: I've searched every which way. I think this may be a Time Machine issue. I hooked up an older BackUp drive to my very old (but re-furbished) MacBook Pro. I was able to find every missing file I could think of because I unhooked it when I got a 2 TB for my newer, but now aging iMac. So, in an attempt to be clear, my older Mac was not a 2 TB (forgot what it was) and my MacBook Pro was not 2 TB, either. That said, I just noticed that the refurbished MBPro is in fact a 2TB, so that's good, because my devices are all wonkily synced in ways I don't recall setting up (because I'm not good at that), so, that's a mystery, too, but, that's TMI for now. If I could just solve the grayed images for now I'd be happy. These screen clips represent just a few albums for show. The first one is my Albums at a glance and the second one is what I see when I plug my phone in. I have plenty of space on my HD (despite being confused about "available space").

It's possible that Photos has lost the connection to the original image. Photos stores a picture, and then uses its database to tell it how to find the picture. With updates and diddling around, it has lost the connection. It seems to know something should be there, but can't find it.

You might be able to restore the connections by doing a "Repair Library." You close Photos and then Command-Option-click on the Photos app. It opens a window asking if you want to repair the library. It takes a few minutes. It may work--depends on the damage. Don't be too hopeful.

If you have backups, you may find some before the damage that would let you export the photos to pick up with the newer version.
