iOS - Google Search Window Disappears Behind Safari Address Bar

After the latest iOS update version 16.1 (20B82), when I use Safari to access Google, as soon as I tap into the search window, the search window disappears behind the Safari address bar at the top of the screen, so I can’t see what I’m typing. Seems like a bug, because it did not use to do this. Is any one else having this problem?

I think I found a fix for this. Go to Settings->Safari and scroll to the bottom where see “page zoom”. Mine shows setting for Page Zoom on “google” and seprste settings for “other websites”. Google was set to 115%, I change this to 100% and problem solved.

Note I am unsure why it showed Google as a separate option from all other sites, possibly because I was on that site when I went to settings.

I am also having this issue and it is beyond annoying. And of course there seems to be no solution and apple support seems to have no clue as to what the problem is. The suggestions given to you to help fix the problem aren’t even related to the problem you’re having. Lame and annoying. All we want is to type into Google and being able to see what we are typing.

I was also screen sharing and the only way I got to a senior advisor was because the first representative I talked to was having the same problem, imagine that, but my advisor continued to blame this issue on either my Google settings or on Google itself so that you got a case number is awesome. I have an appointment at the Genius Bar in 2 days because I already need a new battery in my iPhone 13 mini (it’s at 86% for capacity, which is ridiculous for the age of this phone and that I don’t do things like watch videos/play games on it or even have many apps. My iPhone SE 1st gen. went years with no issues) and I’m going to talk to them while I’m there about this too. If they are any help I’ll post an update

Hi WhyDave, I just spoke to Apple 2 hours ago and they told me the same thing. I also shared it above. Nothing new. But glad they are aware of the issue. Better than what they told me. They said they had no idea what was going on. Haha!! They also told me it was Googles problem, and not Apples. Because Google needs to keep up with updates. It will get fixed. Thanks for the update.

The problem has not disappeared on my iPhone 14 Pro, and I have the latest version 16.2 (20C65), like you do. Are you saying that when you use Safari to access Google, as soon as you tap into the search window, the search window no longer disappears behind the Safari address bar at the top of the screen? It still happens on my iPhone, even after rebooting.

What makes you think it is fixed? The problem has not disappeared on my iPhone 14 Pro, and I have the latest version 16.2 (20C65). Are you saying that when you use Safari to access Google, as soon as you tap into the search window, the search window no longer disappears behind the Safari address bar at the top of the screen? It still happens on my iPhone, even after rebooting. (By the way, each time I post a reply to a specific person. this site just puts my replies all at the end of the discussion string, instead of posting the the specific replies under the specific person's previous post... which is weird.)

Ozzybane: What steps did you use to get to "Show desktop site" on Google.com? I cannot find that in iOS or macOS.

Ozzybane, Kitsikidis and 3X Champ, all posted that the problem is fixed on their phones, but others still have the problem (including me on my iPhone 14 Pro), even though we have iOS 16.2 (20C65). 3X Champ has an iPhone 14 Pro Max; which model iPhones do you have, Ozzybane and Kitsikidis, and what steps did you perform to fix the problem? Thanks!

Hi. The people at Apple have not hidden the fact that while there are full iOS updates that occur (generationally and then sub-updates through the particular generation), iOS may also consistently update little tweaks and fixes and minor security flaws without the end user receiving any notification and not reflecting in a change of version code (such as 16.2 <20C65>). And while I believe a Safari update does not appear in “recently updated apps” in the App Store, Chrome would and I have not received a recent update to Chrome backing back to the beginning of Dec 2022. So given that my issue fixed itself out of thin air (and I believe the others who have reported that, state the same thing without a particular fix), I believe that most likely… Apple, has been implementing subtle updates to remedy this and other issues and eventually, all should receive it. Maybe it’s waves by model iPhone…? I don’t know. But I usually don’t get this lucky with persistent issues just disappearing on their own… so I’m keeping the faith for everyone else that this will eventually be remedied across the board. 🤞

All these fixes some have posted didn’t work for me (text size, desktop version). Right now at the top of my screen I have a message to click on “Google Search with Lens”. I haven’t clicked on it because it fills 1/4 of the top and allows to me to type in the search bar below that. I can see what I’m typing. But no the problem has NOT been resolved for my iPhone 11.

Yes my search window disappears behind the menu and now I’ve got a new one to go with it : once I’ve scrolled down to find the box again, the cursor quite randomly moves 3 spaces to the right of where I am typing. Bizarre, awkward and disconcerting. Then, equally randomly, it goes back to normal. Apple things always used to work. That was why we bought them.
