I'm trying to switch between desktops/spaces by using control-right arrow or control-left arrow and it's not working. How can I switch between desktops using key commands?

Your keyboard shortcuts may be setup to use "option-right/left arrow. Check System Preferences>Keyboard Shortcuts>Mission Control for your current settings. For example, these are the settings I am using:
