External Hard Disk and Ventura

Ever since I updated to Ventura my two hard disks shut down randomly with the error message "Disk not Ejected properly - Eject before disconnecting or turning it off".

I have checked cables, USB ports and all OK. It points to an issue with the OS (updated this morning to 13.0.1.

Please help as I cannot access my music.

I just found a solution that worked for me on my 2018 Mini. I've been having a progressive issue with a WD 2TB SSD in a OWC Elite Pro Mini enclosure dismounting abruptly for probably over a year. In the last month, the drive wouldn't stay mounted for more than a couple minutes. The problem tracked with what I've read here. I tried swapping cables and enclosures. Neither worked (though as you'll see it was not a failing cable, but rather some sort of problem with communication over whole classes of cables). Yesterday, worried that the drive was failing, I ordered a new 2TB hard drive. I connected both to start transferring data over. The new drive started having the same dismount problem. I couldn't transfer more than 100gb. I tried running them off of an Anker dock. Still had the issue.

My solution: I tried my USB-A ports and the drive mounting completely stabilized. Then I realized I was using an Anker cable, and maybe it was the cable. I tried a USB-C 2.0 Anker cable through my Thunderbolt port. The drives were stable with that, too. I then tried an Apple Thunderbolt cable. Stable, plus return of 10gb/s transfer speeds. Cables that didn't work: a thunderbolt cable from 3rd party on Amazon, the USB-C 3.1 cable that came with my ProGrade SD card reader, and the USB-C 3.1 cable from OWC that came with my Elite Pro Mini enclosure. I recommend either using a high quality Thunderbolt cable, or a high quality USB 2.0 cable (if maintaining connection is more important than transfer speeds). Hope this helps someone!

I have this problems too on my Mac Mini M1. I had to downgrade from Ventura to Monterey because my external disks keeps disconnecting even when I was copying files. The most random disconnect take place with my NVMe disk in USB-C case. I leave Ventura on second volume and use Monterey. I observe situation after updates, but Ventura 13.3 still nothing changes. They add emoji and other not important stuffs, but the most important things still not working properly. At least I'm sure that this is not hardware problem. I can not imagine how frustrated must be people that spent a lot money for Mac Studio and stuck with their work because of USB / Thunderbolt port.

After a little more testing, only part of my solution is still working. It turns out that that Thunderbolt cable was only running my Elite Pro drive at 480mb/s. Limiting the drives to 480mb/s through any of the Thunderbolt ports or either USB-A port is problem-free, but when I used a brand-new Anker Thunderbolt cable to connect my drive at 10gb/s, the mounting problems started again. I also tested a USB-A to USB-C cable running my drive at 5gb/s off of a USB-A port - that also triggered dismounting. My Thunderbolt-connected LG 5K display never has any issues, but connecting the drive through the display's Thunderbolt hub results in the same dismounting. I believe that suggests this is a software issue with MacOS maintaining connection to drives using any USB 3.2 protocol. I'm running 13.3.1.

Yes, it's a simple cable swap, all my drives, no matter how they are formatted worked after dropping thunderbolt cable and switching to usb-3.1.

Can't find a single Lacie D2 that is thunderbolt only, they all claim to be usb-C compatible?

It's up to you, but if you have problems with drives, these 20 seconds won't make much difference. Beside snow I'm curious.

Nice to see people posting updates in this thread.

Since I posted in here I began using my storage through a separate dock and since then I've had no issues with the drive disconnecting itself.

Not caring much if I don't get as good performance from it by doing this. As long as it won't randomly disconnect when I'm using it.

Using Mac Mini M2 base model btw.

Using a Mac Pro with a IcyBox 5 drive external USB-C housing, it began with just two toshiba drives not showing up (14TB and 18TB) now the 3 remaining WD 16TB drives don't show up or show up and are unusable. System doesn't want to read or write them. These drives are pretty new and Formatted on the previous OS with the Mac studio. Removing them from the housing and putting them in a cheap USB 3 Ewent double disk adapter: NO PROBLEMS!

Mac Studio

64GB

Ventura 13.2.1

Did: NVRAM reset, no joy, permissions have always been correct and everything is pretty recent. Every Ventura update things just get a little bit worse for this 5 external drives housing. I guess it is up to Apple to unbreak this because I'm not going to format and move around over 60GB of data.

Hi pixlpusher, your situation appears to be identical - and equally maddening - to mine. I use LaCie D2 drives (owned by Seagate) and find that regardless of the size of drive (10, 16 or 18TB etc) the drives are in a constant up/down cycle which makes achieving any task take forever...especially video editing. I've spoken repeatedly with tech support at LaCie and they recommended downloading their Firmware Updater (in our case for Mac). FYI: downloading the firmware update is easy (just a click), but installing it required 20 minutes of highly trained supervision from the LaCie tech and multiple security resets and several reboots. Once you install the LaCie firmware updater, you need to apply the update (it takes 2 seconds to run) to every external LaCie drive you connect to your system...but you only need to perform the operation once, per drive.

The result? No difference!

So, I'm still searching for an answer. Please let me know if you discover anything that might help.

Hi everyone,

I've waited a few days to reply whilst I check all the helpful suggestions.

The following link also sheds some light: https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/yfn2tj/new_in_ventura/

I have found that the problem is solved when I reformat the external hard disks. The worked well with my two smaller USB powered 500 GB drives. Unfortunately my mains powered 2 TB WD disk is 75% full and it plays up every time I attach it to the iMac. I need to copy the contents, reformat the disk and recopy the contents back. Unfortunately it does not stay active long enough for me to access the files and I don't have a sufficiently large disk to recopy!

It seems that reformatting the disks is the only option!

Hi everyone who helped.

My final word on this is that I managed to juggle the data on the offending WD 2TB external hard drive and transfer it onto two reformatted drives. The issue is now resolved, perhaps until the next upgrade! Should I turn off the automatic upgrade function?

Now on a new drive, my music files still need some re-filing before I can play albums. It seems that I have to do this track by track.

How the mighty Apple has fallen in my estimation and respect.

But thanks to all of you who helped me find a way through all this.

i updated from MONTEREY to VENTURA for one single reason, i digress..... because on a long voyage to INDIA and Bangladesh I shot with a NIKON Z9 and the raw images/icons are only seen in the FINDER with Ventura.... not on any previous system. However, now GarageBand loops are not working in VENTURA. My MAX M1 MAC StuDIO and MINI MAC PRO M2 BOTH!!!!!!!! both have A very fast Sandisk 1 TB SSD and there are messages on both computers that disk not ejected properly before disconnecting or turning it off. This is a bug.... no workarounds for me... i know it is a bug. I'll wait for APPLE to fix these things... for now i will connect the external SSD when i need to back up, but leaving them in the thunderbolt drives will result in 100 duplicates of DISK NOT EJECTED properly etc etc etc im sure its not my cables my computers but VENTURA 13.2.1 patience is a virtue.....

I have a Seagate External Hard Drive.

The Drive intermittently disconnected on previous Mac OS versions. But now with Ventura it's a nightmare. I have to go through major gymnastics to get the drive to mount.

  1. The drive system (drive, cable, power supply) seems OK. Proof: I hooked the drive system to my iMac2010 High Sierra. Mounted easily. Dismounted and remounted several times A-OK.
  2. On my iMac2017 Ventura I disconnected EVERY USB device, as suggested. Great, the drive mounted and dismounted A-OK.
  3. Then I added back in my LaCie 16 TB USB-C drive. When I dismounted the Seagate drive in Disk Utility a. it would not remount. Eventually I got several messages like this.

Could not mount “SG_AE2005_16_PHOTOS”. (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error -119930874.)

So, then I disconnected the La Cie. I couldn't reconnect the Seagate, even after unplugging USB cable and Power.

I discovered one additional USB device connected, Zoom H4 USB Mike. I removed that. All I was left with was the Seagate Drive. Still no mount until I unplugged and replugged the drive USB and power. What a pain!

I tried unmounting and remounting. Unable to remount. Same error type. Drive dissappeardd from Disk Utility.

Could not mount “SG_AE2005_16_PHOTOS”. (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error -119930874.)

I contacted Seagate and provided info reports from Disk Utility. They said the drive is OK. My test on the iMac2010 seems to confirm that. So, there is some crazy behaviour from my iMac. I tried much earlier resetting PRAM and SMC. I might try that again with all devices disconnected.

ANYTHING ELSE?

My iMac is 5K 27 inch 2017 Ventura 13.0.1

I ran First Aid on both the iMac 2010 and 2017 for the Seagate drive. No issues reported. And for the La Cie drive. No issues.
