*Unable to open safari at all*

Whenever I open safari, the app name on the menu bar shows that I have opened safari, but the app window is not at all opening. I tried force quitting and reopened it, but no use.


I followed several tutorials online to clear cache, history etc etc. But all in vain.


But, when I created another user account and tried opening safari, it opens there, But not in my main user account.


This is very annoying, for the past several weeks I have been reaching out to the apple support team, but no one has been able to solve this issue. I could not even find anyone facing a similar issue online.


Please anyone suggest me some way to rectify the issue.

I am using MacBook M1 Pro, 14 inch. MacOS Ventura.

I understand that when you launch the Safari app, the app opens but no windows appear. Safari opens and works as expected in a different User Account. Apple Support was unable to fix it.


The fact Safari works in a different User Account suggests a corrupted file in one of several potential places. I have several suggestions that Apple may or may not have had you try, so consider the following.


Quit the Safari app if it is open. Safari menu > Quit Safari. If that menu is dimmed or "greyed out" just force Safari to quit according to How to force an app to quit on your Mac - Apple Support. Then, press and hold a Shift key while launching Safari from Applications, Launchpad, or the Dock. Release the Shift key when Safari opens.


That action causes Safari to open with no previously opened windows or tabs.


If the problem remains, continue.


Quit the Safari app if it is open.


Then, navigate to your User Library by typing the following in the Finder's Go menu > Go To Folder... field.


~/Library


Make it look like this



... and click the Go button. A Finder window will open. The files it contains are some of your User Account - specific files that could be contributing to the problem. Other User Accounts have their own User Libraries.


From there, your task is to find certain Safari-related files and drag them out of their locations and onto the Desktop. Each time you do that, open Safari again and determine if the problem is fixed or not. Quit Safari if it is not fixed, and proceed to the next step. Stop when it's fixed.


Open the folder named Saved Application State. Drag the file named com.apple.Safari.savedState onto the Desktop. Then, back out of that folder (use the "back button") which returns you to ~/Library or just repeat the same Go To Folder actions you did before.


Repeating the same general instructions, open the ~/Library/Preferences/ folder. In it, find com.apple.Safari.plist and drag it onto the Desktop.


That is as far as I'll go for the time being, but you should have the general idea. The worst thing that could happen is that you will be logged out of websites and / or have to provide login information or whatever other website preferences may have been affected, in which case you could always drag those files back into their original locations. Let me know if anything helps.

Major Update: (almost solved)


I created a new user account. I opened safari, as I said before it worked. So I copied all folders related to safari from it and pasted it to my drive.

Folders I copied: Safari, SafariSafeBrowsing, SafariSandboxBroker


I switched to my main user account. Copied these folders from drive to my Library (Replaced the existing above files in my main user account library)


It didnt work.


I then similarly copied and replaced all .plst files from Preferences folder in Library of my temporary user account to main user account.


I restarted my Macbook. I tried opening Safari, it bounced for 4 times but didnt open.


BUT

From the menu I selected File -> New Tab. Which ,as before, showed a blank tab, but later suddenly cloud login page(as we earlier changed the home page to open cloud.com as default site) loaded very slowly, no other visible features were shown, like sidebar.

I used it as an opportunity and opened multiple tabs and windows, and now safari seems to work. But the problem now is, even when I create normal window, only private window is created.


Edit: I am also afraid to close safari now, fearing it again stop working. But howmuch ever I try, only private windows are opened.


Edit 2: No wait, It works. I mean normal window opens. Finally here I am with a great relief of My safari working. But I have no clue why it took some time for this. As it initially didn't open, then took some time, and private windows were able to be opened. Then took some time and opened normal windows

It's ok to do that. Although I prefer to use a more targeted approach it seems that isn't helping you get any closer to a solution.


Moving the entire User Library to the Desktop will cause apps to forget settings you may have specified for them, but you can always move the affected files back into the newly created (empty) User Library.


The EtreCheck report does not seem to implicate anything that could affect Safari. I do not recommend installing any software that drive manufacturers such as Seagate are fond of including with them, but that cannot possibly be related to Safari. Still, I recommend uninstalling it. Those things are not necessary and can only cause trouble.

I agree reinstalling macOS is likely to be a waste of time, since you already know the problem does not occur in a different User Account. Unfortunately I have no idea what the source of the corruption may be. In cases such as yours I will progressively expand the concept of dragging things out of likely folders in ~/Library until something eventually changes.


Also please confirm I am understanding the problem correctly. When Safari fails to launch, does its icon "bounce" in the Dock followed by no other apparent action? Does the Safari app open but no windows appear? In the latter case the Mac's menu bar will indicate Safari at the upper left, adjacent to the  (Apple) menu. What appears in the Mac's menu bar instead of Safari?


Another fundamental question: Please confirm you are launching Safari from /Applications and not some other location. This may not be obvious. To confirm, please use the Finder's Go menu > Applications, and launch Safari from that folder.


Before you go any further please be sure to have created a backup as a fallback solution in the event things get seriously messed up: Back up your files with Time Machine on Mac - Apple Support. That should just go without saying.

Can I use Safari Technology preview as my default browser? Will it be fine? is there any way to install safari for Ventura Like that?


Yes to all questions. You can continue to use it, since it relies upon a separate set of supporting files that obviously are not suffering from whatever corruption may have affected Safari's usual ones.The caveat is that Safari Technology Preview will cease to function when Ventura's version eventually becomes superseded.


The fact it works certainly helps troubleshooting, but it does not add anything to determining the reason Ventura's installed version does not work. Fixing it short of reinstalling macOS (which I don't believe will help) is going to be a time-consuming task because I have no way to determine which file is responsible for its apparent corruption. I can only suggest proceeding along the lines you and I and tygb already suggested... there simply must be another file or files somewhere within your User Account that are causing the misbehavior. This is a tedious task with a communications medium like Apple Support Communities.


Until I can determine and provide suggestions for more targeted areas to examine, you might consider logging into the spare User Account you created, and dragging an ever-expanding set of User Library folders into the Shared folder. Then, log into your normal account and drag them from Shared, replacing your corresponding User Library files.


Share files with others who use your Mac - Apple Support describes the Shared folder and how to use it.


That will obviously be a time-consuming and perhaps unfruitful exercise. Try reinstalling macOS first.

I am afraid I am no closer to finding a solution muhammadwasee_m. All potential solutions should have been addressed by the fairly extreme step of dragging the entire User Library onto the Desktop and restarting your Mac as tygb explained earlier. If I understand correctly, you already did that to no avail.


Perhaps EtreCheck will reveal some information. Read about it here: Using EtreCheck - Apple Community. A thoroughly illustrated guide to using it and posting it in a reply to this Discussion is here: How to use the Add Text Feature When Posting Large Amounts of Text, i.e. an Etrecheck Report - Apple Community.


EtreCheck does nothing except gather information about your Mac and present it in report form. It may not reveal anything actionable, but it will be more information than we have so far. Consider using it. It will reveal nothing of a personal nature. You can drag the app to the Trash when you're finished with it; it does exactly nothing unless it is running.


I was able to find Safari download facility(pkg file, if I am not wrong) for previous MacOS versions. So similarly when such version is available for Ventura, will reinstalling that Safari
solve my issue by any chance??


I completely understand your desire to "reset" or erase the existing Safari problems and start over with a clean slate, but Safari is not available as a separate download. Update to the latest version of Safari - Apple Support explains that it is only updated concurrently with macOS. Since the problem began prior to doing that and persisted after upgrading macOS there is nothing else to do in that regard.

Thank you, that is very helpful. It means Safari is in fact open, but it may be unresponsive or a supporting file may be corrupted.


Just to confirm, what happens when you choose File > New Window? Or is that selection unavailable / "greyed out"?


Can you open Safari's Preferences?


I apologize if you already answered these questions; I am still at a loss to explain and am trying to understand what's going on.


Just a query, does resetting Safari makes any difference?


That's what I was attempting to do by removing various files in your User Library.


If you are getting desperate, you can try downloading Safari Technology Preview: Safari Technology Preview - Safari - Apple Developer. I do not believe you need a Developer Account to download it, and it might serve as a substitute for your needs until we can get the present version fixed.


Safari Technology Preview is not to be confused with any prerelease (beta) Safari versions, which is a totally different program.

But I haven't copied all the .plit files from secondary user account to primary user account. I had copied just the safari related files. So far it seems good with no malfunction (Except forever loading of few webpage occasionally).


In case if I feel any other malfunctioning, I will have to resort to erasing the disk and reinstalling Mac OS. Thanks a lot for your insights and siuggestions.
