Ears weeping and burned from AirPod pro use

I’ve started using my AirPods Pro a lot more, about an hour a day, (didn’t use them regularly very much before) and the following things have happened:

  1. depending on which ear I’m using one or if both, that ear(S) started to burn and then later is wet inside. I wake in the morning with the affected ear encrusted and peeling
  2. I wake in the morning with a mild headache that lasts a few hours or more
  3. Ive been exhausted thru the day

I don’t usually get headaches amd am happy to say I almost always have excellent energy, eat a clean diet, exercise, hydrate well, don’t drink or do drugs, and am healthy and fit. I was getting very worried about my health and actually a little anxious bc of these outcomes. I didn’t associate it with AirPod usage until I read another post on this forum where people were thinking they might be allergic to the materials. However, contact dermatitis does not create fatigue and headaches.

So I experimented, trying one bud at a time and sure enough, that ear was the one that was weeping and crusting. When I stopped using them completely and switched to wired earbuds, my headaches and fatigue disappeared.

Has anyone else had these symptoms? These are expensive earbuds and they should not be causing the harm and subsequent anxiety that they have. I can’t and won’t use them anymore as I’m afraid for my well-being.

There's already a rather long thread on this issue. I believe it's an irritation of the skin in the inner ear caused by chemicals used to make the hard plastic. I tried different tips, no tips and only the tips and would have the issues you describe in a short period of time. I cannot use the AirPods Pro however I can still use the standard AirPods probably because they do not go as deep into the ear canal.

I sold my Pros, but do contact Apple for a refund even if out of warranty.
