Why am I asked for my password each time I connect to my Mac to do a backup

Since upgrading to IOS 16, my iPad asks for my password each time I connect it to my mac so that it can do a backup. Previously, it would ask me only the first time I connected it to a new mac if it should trust that Mac. Now it asks every time I connect it to the same Mac. The same also occurs with my iPhone since upgrading to IOS 15.7.1.

Hi Paul,

If you're being asked each time you back the device up it sounds like you may have an encrypted backup. Here's how to check that:

If you’ve set up the Finder or iTunes to encrypt your backups, the “Encrypt local backup” checkbox in the General or Summary tab is checked.
You can also see whether a specific backup is encrypted:
1. On a Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, open the Finder, click the General tab, then click Manage Backups. You should see a list of your backups. On a Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier, or on a PC with iTunes, from the menu bar at the top of the iTunes window, choose Edit > Preferences, then click the Devices tab.
2. Look for a lock lock icon next to the backup. If you see a lock lock icon, the backup is encrypted.
3. Click OK to close the backup window.

You can find the resource in it's full context including how to modify this setting here: About encrypted backups on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

We hope this helps.

Take care.

I reached out to apple support, and after resetting my privacy setting and then trusting the Mac again, the password was still requested each time I connected the iPad to the Mac. They then had me reset the Network settings, and reestablish my Wifi connection. That also did not make a difference, so it seems that this is the "New Normal" for the device password to be required each time you connect it to a Mac before it will start a backup.
