Time appears HUGE in lock screen after software update

After doing the software update (iOS 16.1.1) the clock in my Lock Screen is in VERY BOLD BIG NUMBERS. The day, and date has not changed but the time is in a ridiculously big font. I have googled everything and nothing has worked. Is there a way I can change this?

iPhone 13, iOS 16

It’s totally ridiculous that you change the “style” a tiny bit (and only on their screens allegedly, but not the size. 😣 Stuck with a great big ugly clock on my screen. Another irritating and pointless change to the homescreen.

Apple has not done a good job publicizing this but -- You Can Set The Font On The Lock Screen

To fix the horrendous looking bold font on the lock screen, simply

  1. swipe down from the top-center to show your lock screen,
  2. press and hold anywhere on the lock screen until "Customize" appears
  3. press "Customize" and "Customize Wallpaper"
  4. tap within the Time widget box to display a set of fonts and weights (serif, san-serif, bold, normal, etc...)
  5. choose the normal weight san-serif (2nd from top-left)

Presto, your date/time font now appears the way it did in IOS 15 and before. Sheeze...

I just did the upgrade from 15.7.1 to 16.3.1 due to the zero-day WebKit exploit. I would not have upgraded from 15.7.1 -- due to senseless screw-ups and upgrade bugs like this time being shown O V E R S I Z E D and in BOLD on the home screen. How does something like this happen. Doesn't anybody do QA that has the snap to notice the change in time size? It's no little change. It looks horrendous.

I'm used to an elegant looking IOS 15 home screen, and now it looks like some kid-with-Crayons did the home screen programming for 16.3.1 and forgot to take into consideration the effect of changes in automatic font-size determination or some other such new nonsense that changed between IOS 15 and 16.

I hope apple fixes this quickly. It just ****** me off every time I have to pick up the iPhone and see the time in 128 pt. BOLD text when it looked perfect in IOS 15.

Not Happy.

I am not sure what “Googled Everything and nothing has worked” means and therefore my recommendation to address this issue may have been tried by you.

Try and Force Restart your iPhone EXACTLY as shown below and see whether that resolves the issue:

  • Press and quickly release Volume UP button
  • Press and quickly release Volume DOWN button
  • Press and Hold the SIDE button until an Apple logo appears and then release the Side button (Can take up to 20 seconds. (DO NOT release Side Button when invited to Slide Power OFF).

They're saying we're not allowed to change it. From @applesupport on Twitter on Sept 16th: "Thanks for reaching out! Changing the size of the digits for the clock is not an option on the Lock Screen." https://uxplanet.org/the-problem-of-clock-font-size-in-apple-ios-16-18bafeae1200 . This is a good article about why it's not well-executed despite the intention being good.

It’s better but it’s still larger and thicker than what it used to be. I have two phones (one personal and one work). The work phone is updated and the personal one is not (as I refuse to upgrade until they fix this issue) and you can see the difference between the two. At the very least Apple should give people the option to remove the clock from the Lock Screen all together if we can’t make it less ostentatious.
