I can’t send/receive IMessages or FaceTimes to my phone number, only my apple ID

When I click on my phone number in the “You can receive iMessages to and reply from” tab, there is simply just a spinning grey wheel and it never becomes ticked. I have tried everything in the article about how to change where you send/receive iMessage/FaceTime from. Please help

iPhone 14 Pro, iOS 16

Hi ciandickinson,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

From your description, it sounds like iMessage and FaceTime didn't activate for your phone number. This article describes the issue in further detail and provides steps that may help resolve it: If you can’t turn on or sign in to iMessage or FaceTime.

Note the steps below. Being able to send and receive SMS is a requirement to set up the phone number for iMessage. You may need to contact your carrier.

"Still not activated after a day?

It might take up to 24 hours to activate iMessage and FaceTime. If the issue continues after 24 hours, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that your device has the latest version of iOS or iPadOS.
  2. If you're using an iPhone, contact your carrier to make sure that you can send and receive SMS messages.
  3. Make sure you can send and receive SMS. If a prompt appears stating "Your carrier may charge for SMS messages used to activate FaceTime and iMessage", tap "OK" to allow possible SMS charges.
  4. Contact Apple Support."

Have a fantastic day!
