Finder keeps moving desktops

How do I stop Finder from automatically moving to different desktops? This has only started happening recently, since updating to Ventura.

Previously there was a Mission Control page in settings to stop this, but now that has gone. Any idea how to stop this anyone???

Hmmm... this appears to work! Thanks, Zslap!

  • Right click on Finder icon in dock
  • Options -> Assign To, This Desktop
  • Move the Finder windows to the desired virtual desktop(s).

Thereafter, the Finder windows stay where they're moved to, which is what I want. When I'm in Finder and control-down arrow and select a Finder window, I get switched to the virtual desktop that Finder window is on, which is also the behavior I expect.

New Finder windows will also stay where I drag them to.

(EDIT: It appears that Options -> Assign To, None also works.)

I am having the same problem and it is slowly driving me crazy. I saw this solution elsewhere and am hopeful that it will fix the issue. Apparently, under system preferences > desktop and dock there is a default setting to "automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use" I have deselected this option. It seems insane to me that this is the default setting, because it disrupts workflow without fail. I hope this fixes the issue and is helpful for others. 🤞

I updated to 13.1 yesterday, and it seems to be fixed! I've had a Finder window on my 3rd desktop (where I like it) for over 24 hours now, no moving around. It's looking like they might have fixed that bug. Merry Christmas!!!

I just updated to Ventura and this is a giant nightmare. I'm at 13.3 and my Finder window will stay put only if it has a single tab or if the first tab is selected. If there are multiple tabs and any of them other than the first is selected, the Finder window will follow me to another desktop. I run multiple monitors and it does this regardless of which monitor I'm on. I've read all the threads and tried all the settings and nothing seems to work. I would call this a rather large bug!!

As far as I can tell, this happens only in specific circumstances, like when you have a window with more than one tab, and a tab other than the first one is active.

This is one bug that I would not have encountered on my own, as I do not use tabs in the Finder (they are invaluable in Safari, for example, though).

The only thing any of us can do is report it. As the saying goes, the squeaking wheel gets the grease...

I would revisit your Settings...and make some changes and compare your results

Finder Settings>

and >System Settings>

Same issue. I am actually shocked that people at Apple are using it this way. If I dont know which desktop the window I have to go to is now on, how would I efficiently switch to there and work. Its insane that this has been around for a year now as I got my macbook pro last year and it existed even before ventura upgrade. I feel that if they have not fixed it then they do not consider it a bug and the chosen behaviour which again I find hard to wrap my brain around. And also when it moves around, for me it resets to first tab no matter what tab I was working in 10 seconds ago. Its pure insanity. I reported it to apple as a bug and never heard back and its never been fixed and I am on 13.3 now. Last night I actually started searching for finder alternatives. Instead of going back and looking at Catalina or Big Sur, its probably easier and more practicle to just use an alternative file browser with tab funtionality. Also its not due to any settings because other apps dont do this and follow you around. I hope someone can tells us some patch or something can fix it, its so sad and crippling.

Every update I'm hoping this will get addressed, disappointment persists. I can confirm Finder stays in place when there's only one tab opened or many but the first one is selected, as someone else mentioned. Incredibly annoying, it makes it hard to work. This is basic OS functionality hindering the user and this is year 2023, the era of AI explosion... can you believe it?

I've been having the same trouble. It's so annoying as I have my own methods of organising my desktop because of my unique requirements, and can't believe that developers arrogantly ignore and don't respect that people have many ways of doing things. Particularly when you become used to the way the software was set up before, then the previous default changes.

I've tried every combination of the mission control settings with no obvious method as to why it keeps doing this.

It's a big enough problem for me, that if I can't solve it, it will be back to Monterey for many years to come.

It's almost as if they are forcing you to use stage manager whether you like it or not!

The proposed "solution" has no effect, finder windows keep switching workspaces (randomly?).

It's just so sad how even the most basic functionality (using the bloody file browser) is broken in mac os today.

And then you can't use external 4k displays without 3rd party software (unless you're ok with a blurry image) 🤦

Seriously, ubuntu is so much more reliable these days compared with mac os (and the UI is more snappy), I wish I could switch (I can't because of organisation policy) 😕
