Issues with dictation since updating to iOS 16.1.1

I'm so annoyed right now. Can someone please help me understand why every time there is an update, dictation stops working?? It used to be that I would hit the microphone and start speaking and Siri would type it out. Now I hit the microphone and it kind of highlights the microphone in grey then it turns off without writing anything. How do I use dictation now?? I took a screen shot of what happens when I push the button now...

The issue is because it cancels imediately when you pause while speaking , even if you pause before you begin speaking .. this has rendered dictation useless .. it occurs on Mac as well. Someone from Apple should be fired they keep going backwards and stuffing things up that used to be fine .. either incompetent or taking the **** and trolling users

Found a better solution that seemed to work rather than turning on the Speak Auto Text. Go to General Settings, Keyboard and turn off enable dictation. Then turn off phone and turn back on. After turning back on, enable dictation in the keyboard settings. This seems to reset and enable the dictation. Simply disabling and re-enabling did not fix the issue - had to turn off phone in between.

A friend called me when his stopped working on his iPhone 13 and I discovered my iPhone 12 Pro Max had same issue. I tried several of the fixes now online ie enable dictation and reboot etc but didn’t seem to fix. However in just messing with settings going to Accessibility, spoken content, typing feedback and turning on Speak Auto text reactivated my mic icon and was able to dictate in messages. It does now have the annoying setting of trying to speak a word I am trying to dictate occasionally but at least it is working now. Definitely a glitch in update they need to fix. It seems to have not been a problem with my husbands new iPhone 14

Hi Erikitty,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. We understand you have some questions about dictation. We're happy to help. To start, make sure you're using these steps when starting dictation:

1. Tap to place the insertion point where you want to insert text.
2. Tap the Dictate key on the onscreen keyboard or in any text field where it appears (as in Messages, for example). Then speak.
If you don’t see the Dictate key, make sure Dictation is turned on. Go to Settings  > General > Keyboard, then turn on Enable Dictation.
As you speak to insert text, iPhone automatically inserts punctuation for you.
Note: You can turn off automatic punctuation by going to Settings  > General > Keyboard, then turning off Auto-Punctuation.
As you dictate text, you can insert emoji by saying their names (for example, “mind blown emoji” or “happy emoji”).
3. When you finish, tap the Stop Dictation button.

See more about those steps here: Dictate text on iPhone - Apple Support

Thanks.
