Cannot scan with HP 5740 series printers

Under macOS 12.6 (Monterey) I was able to scan documents to my desktop via System Preferences > Printers & Scanners and clicking the Scan button. The option to scan seems to have disappeared in macOS 13 (Ventura). Printer is a HP 5740 series all-in-one.

I did d/l HP SmartApp which requires a login that is followed by the error msg "Scanning is Currently Unavailable"

I am at a losss as to what I should do next. Please help.

Thanks to all who replied. As it turned out, my issue was a simple matter of the UI difference between Monterey and Ventura. The button to open scanner in Ventura is only visible after the printer is selected. So, in System Settings > Printers & Scanners, one has to double click the printer listed to reveal the panel where Open Scanner is to be found. After that, all is as it was in Monterey.

Greetings Frank Lowney1,

What we’re going to recommend are the steps in the following article to get started with - Solve scanning problems on Mac

• Make sure the scanner is plugged into an electrical outlet and turned on, and that its cables are securely connected.
• If you previously saw a scanning option and you don’t see one anymore, try deleting the scanner (or multifunction printer) and adding it again.
• If you’re pressing a button on your scanner to perform the scan, try using an app instead, such as Image Capture or Preview, or go to the scanner manufacturer’s website to see what other apps are recommended. See Scan an image using Image Capture.
• If the scanner is connected to the USB port on an AirPort base station, connect the scanner to a USB port on your Mac.
• If more than one user is logged in to your Mac, log out every user. Then log in again and try to scan.

For the error with the HP software, the app support may have some helpful steps and offhand this is a link we found using the App Support details - HP printers - 'Scanning is Currently Unavailable' displays in the HP Smart app (Windows, Mac) | HP® Customer Support

Thanks.

Your printer, HP OfficeJet 5740 e-All-In-One Printer series, is listed in this Apple document, About AirPrint - Apple Support, as AirPrint compatible.

Go to the System/Printers & Scanners setting pane and remove your printer. Then add it back using the wireless/boujour/AirPrint connection option. Rebbot and try a scan.

If all else fails give the demo version of VueScan a try. I use it on my AirPrint HP laser printer. I find it more ;powerful than the app that came with the printer.
