M1 flickering and ghosting on external monitor

I have 2 BENQ PD2720U monitors and have been using them for about 2 years with a macbook pro. Now, with the M1, the monitor flickers and the image stays put, even after unplugging the thunderbolt cable and even after removing power to the monitor. Even unplugging the Thunderbolt cable and even unplugging the monitor's power remains the problem. I have also experienced the problem in my colleagues' systems with the M1 Macbook Air and Dell monitors in different models. On the internet you can find numerous references of people having the same problem with the M1, you can find numerous comments here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/m1-air-ghosting-flickering-with-external-display.2271670/
