duplication of photos as portrait mode and normal mode when transferred from iphone to macbook

Hi,

Whenever I transfer my photos from iPhone to MacBook, all those photos which were taken in portrait mode in the phone are duplicated in the Mac, with one copy of portrait mode and one of normal mode. Such thing is not visible in phone, but only when transferred to mac. I am not able to find any option in either phone or mac to turn off this setting or whatever it is.

Please help! It's eating up a lot of space and my time to delete them!

Thanks.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.12

Which system version is running on your iPhone? And how are you taking the photos on the iPhone? Are you taking the photos in the HEIF format (High efficiency) or are the Settings > Camera > High Efficiency set to "Most compatible"?

If your iPhone is using the HEIF format, you should at least upgrade the Mac to macOS 10.13 High SierraHigh for more compatibility.

Your Mac with macOS 10.12 Sierra does not support HEIC, and if you are shooting HEIF on the iPhone, the photos need to be converted to a different format when downloading them to your Mac. As your Mac is only storing the converted photos and the iPhone the original Photos, the duplicate detection on import will be disabled, when you are downloading photos from the iPhone.

Or are you syncing the iPhone and the Mac with iCloud Photos?

Hey there ChhaviIndia,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. If having issues with seeing duplicate photos on your Mac after transferring photos from your iPhone, check out the steps in the following resource that can help with easily removing those photos: Remove duplicate photos in Photos on Mac - Apple Support

You can easily remove duplicate photos and videos from your library. Duplicates appear automatically in the Duplicates album in the sidebar.
1. In the Photos app  on your Mac, click Duplicates in the sidebar.
2. Select the duplicates you want to merge.
3. Click Merge [number] Duplicates.

One original source photo or video appears where the duplicates were located.

Let us know if that's able to help.

Take care!

Hi Chris,

Thank you for replying.

My Mac is pro 13" early 2015, with mac OS Sierra. It does not have "duplicates" options. It does not support Ventura even if I want to update.

So, is there any other way? or is there other macOS version which I can upgrade into and get this photos issue resolved.

I had called customer care service, they have asked me to delete few photos and wait for few days to check the status.

Thanks

Thanks Léonie for a detailed response.

The iOS on my phone is iOS 16. The photos are set to "high efficiency".

I import the photos from iPhone to Mac via data cable, and do not sync via iCloud.

I am sorry I did not understand much of the last part "As your Mac is only storing the converted photos and the iPhone the original Photos, the duplicate detection on import will be disabled, when you are downloading photos from the iPhone."

Can you please clarify.

Also, what will happen if camera setting is at "most compatible"?

I will try to upgrade the macOS soon and see what is happening.
