ATI Radeon HD 5770 in MacPro 1,1

I've searched all over these forums, there was some talk about the ATI Radeon HD 5770 working in a 1,1 MacPro, but I never really found a definitive answer. In the apple catalog someone posted this:

"It should be fine ATI cards unlike nvidia are built to be compatible with both EFI 32 and EFI 64 interfaces and i know the 4870 is fully compatible even with the first generation intel mac pro some people were saying that the 5770 takes up 2 pci express slots but that is just false i havent had the chance to try it myself since my 4870 is enough for me but i am sure it should work just fine"

Any final word on this? I'm eager to upgrade.

I very much suspect that this is the issue. I'm not sure what I'm suggest won't be deleted but as I have read this;

You won't be able to see the grey/apple logo boot screen if you are using DVI or displayport. The display will be blank until the Mac Pro boots to your desktop. There's a work around for this - simply use the supplied DVI-VGA adapter and connect to your monitor via a VGA cable. You will then be able to see the grey/apple logo boot screen.

About flashed cards which your is? If this is not the issue, I can't suggest anything.

My Mac pro 1.1 video finally died after about a week of odd behaviour. It's not the Apple Display.... that works fine when plugged into my laptop. The Mac itself makes all the right noises, there's just no picture so I assume it's the card.

Thought I'd take it out (can't remember what it is.... it is original though!) and reseat it and followed a youtube video.... which didn't mention the little black clip at the back.... that is now broken!!

Another video for installing the 5770 shows that an extra lead has to be plugged onto the logic board, which is apparently very awkward. So, first, does this lead come with the card? And second, anyone have any info on where this plug socket is on the logic board?

Finally, I don't do gaming on the Pro... it's mainly Aperture, Final Cut Express and the internet.... I was very pleased with the old card.... so is the 5770 a good choice, or are there better alternatives?

Thanks

Hi All,

the 5770 works fine in my MacPro 1,1 - with one excpetion: since I've upgraded to Lion it's not possible to activate sleep mode anymore. Display is getting black and goes to power save but the MacPro is still up & running (I hear the fans). I tried different ways to go to sleep - nothing works. I'm pretty sure this is caused by upgrading to Lion - any hints or is there anybody with Lion installed without sleep mode issues?

Thank you.

Help!!! I paid a tonne of $$ for the 5770 DIRECT from APPLE, installed it and i only get the display out of the DVI port. The screen where I have the Mini-dsplay port connected to is blank. Funny thing is that when I check System Preferences Display Arrangement, the system DOES detect the screen. What gives? Why does it stay blank?

If you are plugging is a Mini Displayport monitor, there is no adapter. The problem many users run into is that the cable must be completely pushed into the socket until essentially all the metal is inside the socket.

If you are hooking up a different display, the interface and the adapters/converters used are the weak link. If you would like help, you will need to provide the details of what display, what interface, what adapters, and the total number of display you want to use.

What is correct regardless of how you choose to look at it is, Your mileage may vary. What it mean as I'm sure you are aware is that it may or may not work.

Now look here for more evidence. Again, your mileage may vary if you are not on the supported list. What is not correct about that? Or helpful Grant?

If you choose to hack and splice then anything is possible. But it's at your own risk.

gumsie, No guarantees that it will work, but a lot of folks had success. Even the link said: "The 5770 in the 2006-2007 is compatible using the newest build of 10.6.4 which is included with the new Mid 2010 Mac Pros and allows you to take advantage of all three display outputs on the 5770."

Again this is not gospel, but this forum is here for folks to share solutions.

MDP is not compatible with my LCD displays

The simplest adapters simply request the Mini DisplayPort to emit an ALMOST equivalent Single-Link DVI signal. It is a known problem that there may not be enough power behind those signals to run THREE display in this fashion. This may be a situation where your particular displays do not work with this signal.

I recommend you shop for an ACTIVE POWERED adapter, which is much more likely to give you success. The only ACTIVE POWERED adapter that Apple sells is their expensive Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter, so that is what they recommend.

ATI has certified others as well, including one by Accell. If in the US, you may want to try this ACTIVE adapter:

http://www.amazon.com/Accell-B087B-006B-DisplayPort-Single-Link-Certified/dp/B00 4071ZXA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314987077&sr=8-1

Note: this adapter is a Single-Link, only good up to 1920 wide. If hooking up a wider display, you will need the more expensive ACTIVE Dual-Link adapter.

Folks, I am happy to report that my MDP-DVI adapters work fine and do does my new screen purchased as a result of further troubleshooting. The issue was with my old screen that does not work with the MDP-DVI signal from any of my Mac computer MDP ports. Had to pay out more $$, but at least I did not waste the upgrade to 5770.
