Connected TV frozen on home screen

TV DISPLAY FROZEN ON HOME SCREEN. I connect my MacBook Eyre to my TV via an HDMI cable. While connected, I restarted my MacBook, and now it is frozen on the background screen. Why am I laptop functions? Normally, my cursor does not appear on the TV screen. I have unplugged the HDMI cable and replugged it with no success. Suggestions?
