iPadOS 16.1.1 News crashing frequently

I’ve seen other reports of this problem and can add a few details.

The symptom is that News.app just folds up unexpectedly. No other apps seem to have a similar issue.

What I can add is that usually, a log is added to the Analytics data showing that News.app has been terminated for consuming more than 90 seconds of CPU time in 180 seconds of wall clock time. Some logs show it expending the allowance in as little as 102 seconds.

News.app crashes do not always produce a CPU resource log, however. Other times, there will be a Jetsam event logged at the precise time News.app exited. I am not versed in Jetsam’s policies or actions and the logs are voluminous; also, Jetsam events occur through the day, News.app or not.. so it’s unclear to me if News.app is being jetsammed due to VM thrash when it doesn’t exceed its CPU limit first.

Either way, News.app seems to be too demanding for my 6th Gen iPad to satisfy.

Config: iPad 6th Generation running 20B101 with 6.8Gb of storage free. WiFi only. WiFi signal three bars of three. 300mbps broadband subscription that speed tests over 360mbps.

On Tuesday 13/12/22 Apple released iOS and iPad OS16.2.  Still suffering from the Apple News persistent crashes on my 9.7” iPad Pro (no issues with iPhone) I had nothing to loose so decided to update.

** Working on my theory that as Apple News is supposedly packaged with the OS I first of all uninstalled the News app but did not reinstall.**

**I then installed iPad OS 16.2.  The process was faultless but Apple News did not install as part of the process so I accessed and it via the App Store.**

Again there is no indication of the version number as with other Apple packaged Apps.  I dually reinstalled the News app which was also faultless and on completion opened it.  It was slightly slow to load up but then worked without crashing.  This was without having my topics set up.  Having copied a list of my topics I then populated the  app with these half expecting the crashing problem to recur due to my extensive list but am pleased to report it is now working as before OS16.1xx

So I presume a fix is now in place either with the News App and/or the OS update.

I just wish Apple would communicate with their users as a group when issues such as this occur.  Many thanks to those who have reported the issue to Apple per se and hope the problem has resolved for yourselves. I am however sorry to learn that some of you are still having problems after the update.

If you need to free up free, internal data storage space on an iPad/iDevice, you need to start by backing up your iPad to either Apple's iCloud ( you may need to pay for additional, monthly storage space ) or by connecting your iDevice to a an older Mac or Windows PC computer running the latest iTunes or, if a newer Mac with a much newer macOS, like macOS Catalina, or later, use the macOS Finder to do the device backup and/or use some other offsite, “cloud” data storage/backup services, like Google Drive/Photos, BOX, DropBox, Amazon Cloud Drive, Flickr ( for photos/images ), etc.

Then, delete any installed apps that you no longer use or use infrequently enough that they aren't missed (you can always reinstalled any purchased or free apps at some time later, as you need them).

In addition, uninstall any games that appear to be using a sizable chunk of your iPad's internal storage, as well!

( A disclaimer to the immediate advice above. )

If you own a 7-10-year old iPad, you SHOULD ONLY delete apps that you have ever seldom used or no longer use as there is NO WAY now, from 2020 onward, to retrieve these old apps from the iOS App Store, any longer.

( Third party iOS app developers have permanently removed all of their older, legacy apps from Apple's iOS App Store servers forever!

There are, VIRTUALLY, NO more older, useful, popular, third party apps for over 8-10-year old iOS devices, any longer! )

Then, thin out/delete any music/videos/movies/TV shows/podcasts/screen recordings/photos-images/eBooks/

eMagazine/iBooks/audio books/Documents/PDFs, etc.

If you use a POP email account on your iPad, delete/thin out any old saved emails that maybe saved to your iPad.

To permanently delete photos/images off of your iDevice go into the Photos app and find the Recently Deleted folder/album and permanently delete any photos/images stored in that folder/album.

Also, you can check to see what other stuff is eating up all your valuable data storage space by going into the Settings App,,General Settings Panel, in the right hand column, tap Storage & iCloud usage panel ( in iOS 11 and later, it’s now called iPad Storage ), in the top Storage Panel, tap the Manage Storage panel, wait for a list of apps to generate that will tell you how much space each app is taking up on your iDevice.

Then, for older iPad models with a Home button, do a hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttonsOR

For much newer, larger screen iPad models, without a Home button, try the new hard reset procedure for the new 2018/2020 iPad Pro and iPad Air 4 models.

1. Press and release the volume button closest to the top Power button.

2. Then immediately press and release the Volume button farthest from the top Power button.

3. Then, press and hold the sleep/wake/power button at the top. You will see the Slide to Power off button, but keep on holding down the power button until you see the Apple logo, then let it go.

Once you have performed all the steps, wait for a few seconds and your 2018 iPad Pro will boot up completely to the iPad Pro’s Lock screen.

ALL iOS/iPadOS devices need to maintain, at the very least, a minimum of between 3-6 GBs of free data storage space, AT ALL TIMES, to insure normal/nominal functionalities/operation and general overall performance of any iOS device running iOS/iPadOS.

If not all of this solves your iPad storage issues, your ONLY other option is to do a complete backup, erase and restore of your iPad model.

Some forum authors suggest that the crashing problems are due to low memory so I have tabulated the available memories both storage and probably more importantly RAM on our four devices and this definitely rules this out.

Device.        Chip.  Speed.   Cores.     RAM.    Mem.    Avail.

iPad Pro 9.7*.  A9x.  2.1 GHz       2        2GB   128GB.  61.3GB.

iPad Air 2.**.   A8x.   1.5 GHz      3        2GB    64GB.  17.5GB

iPhone XR.    A12.   2.5 GHz    6(2+4)     3GB    128GB.  61.6GB

iPhone 13.     A15.   3.2 GHz   6(2+4)     4GB    128GB.  79.7GB

*Apple news crashes on this iPad since OS 16.1 up to 16.1.2

** Apple news does not crash on my wife’s slightly older Air but I hadn’t realised that she is running OS 15.7 which is now the latest update available for that device apart from security updates.

The Jetsam crash reports on my Pro show “iPhone OS 16.1.1” , product “iPad6,3” and build “iPhone OS16.1.1 (20B101).” Why Apple are identifying what was a later release of iPad OS as being “iPhone 16.1.1” is very suspicious

I am more than ever convinced that the issues have evolved on the iPad since the OS 16.x update series and that is where the issue should be resolved.

Once you get some extra internal data storage space on your iPad.

If the Apple News app still is crashing

Just delete the Apple News app, first.

Then, for iPad models with a Home button, do a simple hard reset/forced restart of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake/power button simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons.

OR

For much newer design iPad models, without a Home button, try the new simple hard reset/forced restart procedure for the new 2018-2022 iPad Pros, 2020/21 iPad Air 4 and 5, the 2021 iPad Mini 6 models and the new 2022,,10th gen base models,

1. Press and release the volume button closest to the top Power button

2. Then immediately press and release the volume button farthest from the top Power button.

3. Then, press and hold the top single sleep/wake/power button You will see the Slide to Power off button, but keep on holding down the power button until you see the Apple logo, then let it go.

Once you have performed all the steps, wait for a few seconds and your 2018-2022 iPad will boot up completely to the iPad’s Lock screen.

Then, re-install the Apple News app from the iOS App Store

See what happens.

Good Luck to You!

Okay, but you still need to free up some free, internal dats storage space.

I left you another solution to try, once you get some more internal space freed up.

Using a iPad with constant minimum operational internal storage is not really a good idea.

All computers and computimg devices need a mimimum amount of internal data storage for the OS to function at an aceptable and nominal level.

Also, No one here works for Apple.

We are all, largely, other Apple product users here, just like you.

No one here works for or represents nor works for Apple.

This Apple News app crashing appears to be a current common and growing issue under iPadOS 16.1.

My additional solution may, or may not help with this.

Having an iPad with more than the minimal operstional storage limit will always help and is always preferrable.

If you think you have a theory about the current Apple News app crashimg issue that you wish to share with Apple, you can leave unacknowledged feeeback, diredtly with Apple by submitting feedback to Apple using the feedback link below.

In your case, it appears your iPad is nearing its minimum internal operational storage limit.

iOS/iPadOS needs a minimum of 3-6 GBs of constant remaining storage, that MUST BE MAINTAINED AT ALL TIMES, to insure/ensure nominal, acceptable operation of all iOS/iPadOS functionalities.

The Apple news app, may not have enough internal operational free data storage space to operate inand its crashing, as a result.

What is the rated, internal data storage space/capacity of your iPad model?

If it is a 16 GBs model, there is little to nothing to be done.

16 GBs storage iPad starts out, after initial drive formatting, at approx. 14.5 GBs of free, internal storage.

After the installation of iPadOS, at approx. 6.5 GBs, leaves 8.0 GBs of of free, internal data storage space.

iOS/iPadOS needs a minimum of 3-6 GBs of constant remaining storage, that MUST BE MAINTAINED AT ALL TIMES, to insure/ensure nominal, acceptable operation of all iOS/iPadOS functionalities.

This leaves a 16 GBs iPad with ONLY a practical, usable storage space of between 2 and 5 GBs AND THAT IS IT!

This is virtually NO internal data storage to do much of anything with that iPad!

This is why Apple quietly, silently did away with all 16 GBs iOS device back sometime in 2016.

A 32 GBs storage iPad starts out with approx 30 GBs.,after initial internal flash drive formatting.

Minus approx. 6.5 GBs for iOS/iPadOS leaves between 23-24 GBs.

Minus 3-6GBs, for iOS/iPadOS system operational reserve, that MUST BE MAINTAINED AT ALL TIMES, to ensure/insure normal, expected operation of iOS/iPad OS, leaves approx. between 18-20 GBs of actual, usable data storage space.

Even with 20 GBs of actual, usable internal data storage space in an Apple iOS/iPadOS device,

a 32 GBs data storage devices are, now, more quickly, becoming the “new” low storage 16 GBs internal data storage space devices, today, a 32 GBs Apple iOS/iPadOS device has 3-4 times the internal data storage space of older base model, low internal data storage,16 GBs. internal data storage Apple iOS/iPadOS devices.

In reality and in use, in 2022, a 32 GBs internal data storage device is kind of a joke and of limited usefulness, when up to 2TB of internal data storage ( approx. 1.8 TBs or usable internal data storage ) portable tablet devices exist today.

Apple put an end to 32 GBs devices, in September 2021, with the base model iPad now offering 64 GBs of internal data storage ( approx. 50 GBs of actual, usable internal data storage ), which, for a few more years, anyways, has enough storage to make an iPad useful for longer period of time before data storage fills up.

Purchasing a low storage Apple device, to save on the cost of the device, is a false economy.

If a 32 GBs storage model iPad you maybe have a chance at freeing up more free, internal data storage by deleting stuff you do not need or use on that iPad.

The iPad in question is a 128GB iPad. It has a pretty meager number of apps on it, but I keep a bitrate-reduced full copy of my music on it. The lossless master library is on another system, so I will just take the music off of the iPad and see what happens.

But the issue remains that it appears only News.app is failing due to this “lack” (6.8 GB available) of free storage space. I still cling to the idea that News.app could be more economical with its CPU and memory demands.

Nov 30, 2022 5:12 PM in response to Finchale

Looking at Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Analytics & Improvements -> Analytics Data on both my iPhone and iPad.

The IPhone, which works flawlessly for Apple News, shows numerous entries for all dates in format: “News.cpu_resource-2022-mm-dd”

These open up data files starting “app_name”:”News”etc followed by lengthy report file.

However on the iPad with its crashing News App there are no  “News.cpu_resource-2022-mm-dd” entries and only one “News-2022-mm-dd-001438.ips”

Maybe there is a clue here to the crash problem on iPad?

My News app on my iPad has, not unexpectedly, just crashed yet again. I have taken a look at the corresponding Jetsam report which starts as follows. Interestingly the OS is described as “iPhone OS 16.1.1” , product “iPad6,3” and build “iPhone OS16.1.1 (20B101)”.

{"bug_type":"298","timestamp":"2022-11-30 15:54:56.00 +0000","os_version":"iPhone OS 16.1.1 (20B101)","roots_installed":0,"incident_id":"9EF489BF-CD4A-4A44-A97F-EAB5C5AAD391"}

Don’t know why it mentions iPhone OS when it was a later release update to iPad OS? Maybe just lazy programming and of no significance.
