Connecting LG UltraFine monitor (24MD4KL) to MacBook Pro 13-inch 2017 four thunderbolt 3 ports

I have been using this monitor on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), albeit using a mini-display port to USB C adaptor, and it's been working great. I now have a MacBook Pro 13-inch 2017, and bought a USB-C bi-directional cable, and the display does nothing.

The LG 24MD4KL monitor:

The specs on the Mac

Thought it might be a drivers thing, so I installed LG's OnScreen Control version 5.65. Still nothing.

what cable did you buy exactly?

The ad you linked sys a Thunderbolt-3 cable is included. THAT is the cable you should be using to connect the display to your Mac.

Hello Grant and Lex,

Thank you for your replies.

After spending 2+ hours last night on the phone with Kevin at Apple Support, we established a few things:

  • when the monitor is connected to the Macbook via the monitor's firewire port, I can run sound to the monitor, but no video, and no display is detected in System Settings
  • If I disconnect power to the Mac, then connect the Mac to the firewire port on the monitor, the Mac receives power via the monitor

I don't think it's the cable. Using a different USB-C cable the same problem occurs.

It's all pretty surprising stuff, considering the Mac is running Ventura, and the LG UltraFine is a very good machine.

The issue has now been escalated to Engineering. I am told to wait 5 business days.

Definitely surprised and disappointed in Apple (but huge shout out to Support guy Kevin) on this one.

Anyone want to see if they can solve this one faster than Apple Engineering?
