iPhone13 wallpaper image degraded after update to iOS 16

I have a personal image that I have been using for my iPhones wallpaper & lock screen image for ALL my iPhones (3 through 13) the last dozen or more years. The original is a high res image that has displayed very well on ALL previous devices including the iPhone 13 until yesterday's udate to iOS 16. Now the display of the image looks like a low res thumbnail image that has been enlarged with all the expected degradation of image quality.

How do I get the original image quality restored?

Do I have to reload / re-select the image anew?

This has never happened in any of my prior iPhone nor iOS updates !

Hi redlouis1,

It's possible that you are using iCloud Photos with the "Optimize iPhone Storage" option enabled. Use iCloud Photos on iPhone describes the feature as:

Save space on your iPhone
iCloud Photos can help you make the most of the storage space on your iPhone. When Optimize iPhone Storage is turned on, all your full‑resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud in their original formats, with storage-saving versions kept on your iPhone as space is needed.
Optimize iPhone Storage is turned on by default. To turn it off, go to Settings  > [your name] > iCloud > Photos, then tap Optimize iPhone Storage.

If your device does not have sufficient space to download the higher-resolution copy, attempting to use it as a wallpaper could result in the behavior you describe. Go to Settings - General - About to view the current available storage for your iPhone. If low storage is behind this behavior, removing unused apps, videos, songs and other media can be used to increase available storage.

Regards.
