Infuriating muting of sound when texts arrive

Five years ago someone asked the following question but never really got an answer. "There is a built in feature on the iPhone that mutes the audio one is listening to when a text is received. Why? For someone who listens to audiobooks and podcasts, this is super-annoying, as I then have to rewind, usually twice, since I get two notifications for every text. Can this feature be turned off?" Are there only two of us who find this 'feature' maddening? I couldn't find any other mention of it on the internet and have yet to find a way of stopping this pointless and extremely irritating muting of sound for 5 seconds when a text comes in. Why does Apple do it?? Can anyone help get rid of it? Thanks!

Thank you, that is helpful, but I would still like a text to ping so that I know it has arrived, just not mute the sound of whatever you are listening to at the same time - the Do Not Disturb function will turn off the ping too. I don't know why Apple thinks a ping on its own is not enough to alert you that a text has arrived - after all, it is enough at all other times. The muting of what you are listening to is completely pointless yet Apple has always done it. I just wish I knew why, and that they would allow you to turn this 'feature' off.
