iPhone 14 Pro Max proximity sensor does not work on whatsapp voice messages

I have written an email to “Tim Cook”, I’ve been calling from their engineers, if we don’t push them in the way to update the software, they will not do by themselves. So call them and write to them daily. It is not a problem of the single device.

Sadly there is nothing, you, I or Apple can do to force WhatsApp to fix their software, only they can.

WhatsApp is owned by Meta, who also own Facebook which also has had functionality broken for several months now. (The selector to see New or Most Recent content hasn't worked in their own app for a while, and perhaps intentionally as they want you to see the most active posts rather than the most recent ones.)

Facebook/Meta has been doing a terrible job lately with iOS/iPadOS and macOS applications. It's an ongoing issue.

The root cause is that some apps do not make use of the proximity sensor. iMessage does, Telegram does, if WhatsApp or other apps don’t you need to badger the app provider.

I tried that. The problem is easy to replicate. See my comments above and try with the same device and versions.

WhatsApp Support told me they have seen the problem and reported to the team in charge to take care of it. I had to send videos to prove them something was wrong.

I have exactly the same problem on a iphone 14 pro max, the proximity sensor does not seems to work on any app, in calls (native phone app)it works but almost 8/10 phone calls the screen goes black like 5-7 seconds later and 1/10 times it don’t go black

I went to a local Apple Store explaining the problem for the third time. The first time they asked me to wait for a software update, so I waited for 16.3.1 to be released. After a month, exactly on February, I went to a closer Apple Store. They checked every component (test and trial) by confirming the huge latency with the proximity sensor in iMessage, Phone app, etc.

They sent an escalation mail to Apple assuring me that he would call me back when he had an answer. After a month I still haven’t gotten that answer.

Today I went to the Apple Store I first went asking to fix the problem. They changed the display without fixing the problem. I then asked to get a replacement unit, but the guy refused. I then asked for a back part replacement (the part which contains basically everything: logic board, battery, etc). They refused again because there is no known problem with the proximity sensor, he said. I said I was exactly there for reporting the problem and getting it fixed. He showed me the Apple home page (???) asking me if I saw any problems written there.

In short, he couldn’t manage to fix the problem (nor didn’t he try), and he also said that probably iPhone wasn’t the best phone for me.

After 8 years of using Apple products I’m really switching to other products.

I Think this ist wrong. During the Troubleshooting activitievs with apple support we detect the same problem in Apple voice memo. On top: after new start of the phone, once the system works correct. Sure that whats app ist the problem??,

If you see the same behavior across multiple apps, it may be your device.

Since you were working with Apple Support directly, you should follow whatever advice they offer as far as next steps.

All anyone here could tell you to do would be to contact Apple Support, which you've done.

I have the same problem on the iPhone 14 Pro.

And I didn't find the solution, I don't know if this problem is in WhatsApp or on iPhone.

It’s not only WhatsApp. Even in the Apple Store they confirmed the same behavior with the phone app (not even tried WhatsApp).

You are right. They have fixed the problem in Telegram app in one of the last updates... it works perfectly now.

Whatsapp still doesn't.

Yeah, I guess they fixed the issue this week with the leatest updates.

In the mine and in the one of my girlfriend, (both iPhone 14 pro) after we put on the ear during a call, the screen goes in black. But in Whatsapp, Instagram and Messenger unfortunately no.
