Ventura iCloud Desktop sync issue

I have a Mac Pro desktop and M1 Max MacBook Pro that are both running Ventura 13.0.1.

Since upgrading to Ventura I get very sporadic sync issues between the desktops of both computers. New files added will add but deleting of files doesn't work. So it is syncing, just not accurately.

I have tried, rebooting, signing out and back into iCloud, changing networks.

Anybody else having issues with Ventura properly syncing their desktops between two devices?

If it helps anyone. Apple does not support this for unknown reasons, but if you're hanging and iCloud updating, without signing in and out of iCloud or rebooting, open a terminal and run killall bird . This resets the iCloud service. If still hanging force quit finder then killall bird. Took me a few time to get mine to up dated fully. I was told that iCloud does not support over 100GB of data in iCloud. Thats BS.

Should have said this at first but also go into Activity Monitor and make sure there are no services in red. If so force quit them and start the process above.

Apple Lvl 2 support said nothing should ever be ran from the terminal. Thats no how macOS operates. It's a Joke.

I just updated to Ventura 13.2, and as of that update, my Macbook desktop documents are no longer being synced to my iCloud account. I do not see an option in settings to choose to include my document files any longer. Before this update, I had a number of files and documents on my Macbook desktop, and while they are still visible on my other devices from the documents file of my Icloud account, they no longer are visible on the Macbook's desktop. I have to navigate to them through Finder, iCloud, desktop. Previously they were actually visible on the computer's desktop without having to go to Finder, iCloud, desktop to see them. Something changed in the IOS update and I cannot find where to change it back.

Hi I tried all of that I found out, it is macOS ventura the tips and tricks do it in safe mode and all the other tricks like log out icloud and nothing helps. But then I found out on Reddit that apple somehow admit that its more the operating system than us user. Oh thanks for that but they still not managed or use their time to fix it. I did not have this issue on Monterey everything worked smooth as butter. Now I tried to downgrade to Monterey but its pretty difficult since Apple do not want you to downgrade to something that works. Sorry my negativity but I am annoyed at apple.

update : phoned UK support (0800 107 6285) - unspecified 'problem with a couple of apps' seen (on iCloud Drive), case referred to software engineers ('usually 3 to 4 business days') - email received from agent and callback scheduled to follow up

note : 'killall bird' and removal of ~Library/Application Support/CloudDocs only ever succeeded in momentarily resetting the uploading/downloading counts to zero - no data transferred

update : in consultation with an Apple senior advisor (Mac specialist), erased hard drive, installed fresh 13.5, no Migration Assistant

3 days of reinstalling, re-registering, and manually reconfiguring applications later :

- no Safari bookmarks - always same message : "You can't change bookmarks right now because they are being synchronised."

- no Photos - always same message : "Syncing with iCloud…"

- no Contacts older than 3 days (and those only from Siri)

- Numbers, Pages can view iCloud directories, not download/open files

- iCloud drive folders only populate with filenames when selected in the Finder, most files have generic icons/previews; syncs of even tiny plain text documents remain incomplete, 'progress' continually stalls, item counts and total sizes change dramatically from session to session

Time Machine external disk rejecting password (no Keychain)

Notes, Reminders ok

iOS devices ok

Hello!

Same problem but from iPad Pro 2022 to Mac Mini M1 2022. Both have most recent updates of all software, both have proper permissions and on same account. It's looks like it is trying to sync but never advances. I have restarted the Finder, didn't help. Desktop does not even show the files as needed to sync, but they do. Looked like this all morning and says 9.9 of 9.9 uploaded all morning, too.

Thanks!

I am having the same issue as the OP, even in safe mode.

I have a Mac Studio and a Macbook AIr both running Ventura 13.2.1. I rely HEAVILY on my desktop and documents syncing. New files added show up on both computers, but deleting files is not successful from "both", even if the recycle bin is emptied. Is there any update on this issue?

I have the same problem. I did find that from the terminal your can do a sudo killall bird which will typically reset the connection. I was able to do that after the terrible experiences with Apple support.

I was told to sign out of all devices to iCloud. Did nothing. I was told to remove all files in iCloud. Did so and still same problems. I was told to create a new profile, did so and still same problem. I was told that I installed software the caused the problem, I have not installed anything new but updates proving incorrect. Was asked to run EthreCheckPro and when the free version showed nothing ask to purchase a Pro license and sent with no updates since. I was rudely yelled at that I can not run killall bird from the terminal since it is not a command that Apple support was not aware of and should not use the terminal for any usage. It has been quite difficult and when trying to get information about my ticket it goes unanswered. When taking my MBP to the App Store the Genius were unable to help since the WindowServer process was running high and had a windows VM installed inside Vmware Fusion they were blaming as the problem.

At this point I have lost faith in Apple Support. When asking questions to level 2 support they had no idea what I was talking about and over their head, but I can not told to anyone above them. Very disappointing.

I STRONGLY urge you NOT TO BUY the new Ventura Mac. I went from an incredibly user friendly 2009 Mac that finally died and bought a loaded mini. The Ventura is NOT a seamless transition by any stretch of the imagination. I am ready to take this up with my credit card company to kill the sale for Apple selling a piece of garbage that does not work properly as there are no returns or refunds. This is a shameful downfall for this company. Things like music sync options with the cloud or other devices are mysteriously not there. Despite a new operating system and loads of memory and storage, the loading times from external drives is tediously long and sluggish. DO NOT BUY APPLE!

I own a MBP 16 2019 when my mac is going to be retired I will build my own pc. And dual boot with Windows which I do not like at all, and Linux. I do not like you are not able to repair or upgrade considered the high prices. I already downloaded all my photos and files from icloud and canceled Icloud subscription. I am slowly migrate away from apple. I either do not like they leave intel macs behind or at least release drivers so we can install another operation system so it fully works. Yes I been a huge apple user I did not want to move away but apple is helping me to do so.

I've been having similar issues. I called UK tech support and thought the problem had been resolved but it hasn't.

I own a tech company and thought I'd try Apple Mac and maybe move everyone over to Apple. I wish I hadn't.

I can't afford to have files not syncing across devices. I have had a syncing facility through other cloud providers for well over a decade and have been using iPhone and iPad for many years. I had heard iCloud syncing was a key benefit of going over to Apple. It isn't true.

What is the point of purchasing a much more expensive machine with a lower specification than its competitors? It only makes sense if the software has a particularly strong advantage. I don't see any sign of that advantage.

In addition to this syncing issue, Microsoft products are always having issues on Mac. The headaches and higher costs aren't worth it. This is my first and last Mac.
