iPhone 7 compatible with series 6 watch

I got a refurbished 6 watch because I read it was compatible with 7 iPhone now I found I need an 8 or later iphone. Is that correct

iphone I tried to connect an apple refurb se 1gen watch to an iphone 7with IOS15- minimum is supposed to be iphone 6s but it wouldn't pair. I did manage to pair it iphone 8 but the watch upgraded to watch OS9 . What do I need to do to pair it with the iphone 7 correctly ?

Yes, if the watch is on 9.0 or newer.
