Brother printer not responding

Installed a new Asus router. Brother printer (which had been working for many years on last two routers) which is TCP/IP-attached is not responding. I've deleted and added the printer, followed Brother instructions, and rebooted the printer. Nothing has worked. Printer's configuration has not been changed.

When attempting to print the following messages are displayed:

  • Print queue: Looking for printer. Printer status changes from "Idle" to "In use".
  • Print queue: Connecting to printer
  • Print queue: The printer is not responding.
  • Cancel file. Printer status goes back to "Idle".

Am running last update of Catalina.

I'm do not know what to check next. Ideas?

Problem solved. The ASUS network is 192.168.50.xxx. All my other routers have used a network of 192.168.1.xxx. So I changed the printer's address to 192.168.50.xxx and it is now working.

Thanks for replying.

Hi,

Any information about the exact Brother printer model?

Generally speaking, a printer may be limited to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connections. In case of a dual-band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) router, difficulties cannot be ruled out. Many routers have a "smart" way of detecting devices and selecting the appropriate band, but that may not always work. It may become necessary to split/rename bands. See also the following article: https://help.brother-usa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/73618/~/compatibility-with-5-ghz%2C-dual-band-wireless-router%2C-or-mesh-networks

If your printer is an AirPrint model (see the list in About AirPrint - Apple Support), and there is a problem with device discovery, you could try the following procedure (in this order, with these waiting times): Power off the Wi-Fi router, the printer, the Mac, and all other connected devices/computers. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the router. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the printer. Wait a minute or two. Power on the Mac. Finally, power on all other devices/computers.

If needed, reset the printing system and re-add the printer:

I apologize for not stating that the printer is cabled to the router and does not have wifi capabilities.

The printer is a MFC-7820N.

I reset the printing system. When adding the printer the printer's name was shown in the list of printers. For location I specified the printer's static IP address. However, when attempting to print the problem persisted.

Research showed ASUS routers can have one of two gateways. I tried each of those (changing the printer's TCP/IP configuration) and rebooted the printer after each change. The problem persisted.

Seems that the Mac can find the printer but the printer does not respond.

I'll keep researching as I don't know what to do next. Thank you for your response.
