iOS 16 Messages Bug - Missing and Out of Order Messages

I am using iMessage, but not iCloud Messages (i.e. my messages are only stored locally on one device - my iPhone). The iOS 16 update has completely scrambled my messages (messages are out of order by date), and many are no longer viewable - meaning the message threads are missing. The storage size of the Messages app is the same as prior to the iOS 16 upgrade (which suggests the data has not been deleted), but entire years of messages are now no longer viewable (however, certain threads that appear to be missing pull up with a targeted search).

I have a complete local backup of my pre-iOS 16 iPhone as well as an iCloud backup. I tried re-installing iOS 16 and restoring from both the local backup and the iCloud backup, but the problem persists, even after the two minor updates to iOS 16. (As a test, I restored the backups on another phone that was running iOS 15 and the messages were completely intact and in order.)

I called Apple Support but the representative simply told me to use iCloud Messages (which I do not want to do at this time). I’ve spent a lot of time researching this issue and a potential fix, but I am unable to find any solutions or similar bug reports popping up in the forums. My guess is that somehow the indexing is scrambled with the new update.

While it's not quite what you had, we had problems with mum's iPad (5th gen) after updating to iPadOS 16.1.1. The iMessage app stopped sending or receiving, and had weird behaviour like the message just disappeared after pressing return, or it showed as sent but nothing was received at the other end. Oddly Safari was working fine, so the internet was definitely connected. I tried every suggestion I could find, turning on/off, resetting network settings, rebooting wifi.

The only thing that has worked was backing up her iPad to my computer, erasing the iPad completely, then reinstalling from the backup.

Hi ASC4, We appreciate you reaching out to us.

If you haven't, please update your device to the latest version of iOS 16.

While it isn't inherently assured that an update will resolve the issue, updating to the latest software version for your device can help isolate potential software issues.

Kindly secure a backup and update.
