iOS 16.1.2 battery drain

This update drastically increases battery consumption, disabling crash detection returns it to normal. I have an iphone 14 pro.

To disable crash detection, go to Settings > Emergency SOS, uncheck “Call After Severe Crash”.

I have an iPhone 13 Pro with 91% battery health -- of which the health of the battery dropped from 98% to 91% after the ios 16.1 update. The past few weeks, my phone has been losing 8-12% an hour and running hot with it just sitting there and not much activity. Actually using it for anything that you would want to use a smartphone for drained it even faster. I have both called Apple "customer service" and visited the "Genius" bar and everything checked out and they couldn't find any issues with the battery or the ios. I explained to both that there are known threads out there describing these issues that many are experiencing, but they had no knowledge about it. Not sure what the point of these boards are if Apple doesn't actually review or assist and they leave their customers to fend for themselves. Pretty poor all around service when they won't acknowledge known issues.

Following the advice of someone else on another thread, I disabled contact sync and that seems to have solved the problem. The problems for me seemed to be around syncing the contacts to iCloud, so I turned that feature off for now. If I find the battery drain has continued, I'll update here. Hopefully, ios 16.2 fixes this issue when it is released next week and we can turn contact sync back on. There should be no reason we have to dumb down these smart phones.

If your battery is draining quickly while you are not using it, this means that background applications are running and updating (refreshing). To stop this, you have two options: (1) SETTINGS > GENERAL > BACKGROUND APP REFRESH. Turn OFF Background App Refresh. Or, you can turn off individual apps from refreshing. (2) SETTINGS > BATTERY > LOW POWER MODE. By turning ON the Low Power Mode, it will turn off Background App Refreshing.

Some people say that they have to turn off Bluetooth to stop the battery drain. Not sure if that is true or not.

If the battery usage is higher then normal while using your device, you should check the brightness of your display. SETTINGS > DISPLAY & BRIGHTNESS. Adjust the brightness by moving the slider to the left.

You can also try rebooting your device. Sometimes this fixes the battery level.

I have a similar symptom (battery drain), but it seems to be caused by the Wallet app. I installed the update last night, haven't touched the wallet app since the update and yet it's draining 38% of the battery.

update: I forgot to mention that I'm also using iPhone 14 Pro and the phone got really warm after I unplugged it from the charger (even a few hours after I unplugged). Using low power mode seems to workaround the issue for the time being.

I don't have crash detection on, it's not an option on my phone (13pro) but this update literally overnight nuked my battery performance. It updated overnight then when i woke up my phone wasn't charged to 100% (abnormal), no matter how much i kept it plugged in (charging icon was there) it wouldnt budge above 85%.

Did a force reboot which slowly got it charging upwards. Tried swapping between plug socket charger and macbook usb and both were charging at a rate of around 1% every 5mins. Normally the plug charger is very fast because it's the ipad charger.

Battery is also draining much quicker than usual.

It's a pain because now you get paranoid about the phone's performance. Why apple can't release an update that doesn't shaft at least some % of its user base is beyond me. We pay enough for these bits of kit - they should work seamlessly and not create additional headaches.

Im at the edge of going insane.

ive been using iphones since 2012.  The first time i encountered unusual and unsolvable battery drains after updating to ios 14.4

that upgrade ruined my iphone 7 and i switched to iphone 13 mini. which did not eliminate occurences of excessive battery drain.

last time find my and then contact sync problems caused this and i needed to turn off them in order to get adequate battery consumption.

Today out of nowhere phone began to burn like **** and consume 1-2% a minute or less. There was nothing running except safari. I was browsing regular wwb sites. Force quitting safari did not eliminate excessive cpu usage. I needed to force restart the phone. Which seems to work so far.

I am so annoyed by those problems of iphone. Paid premium price but had worse experience than cheapest alternatives. So disappointing

I took mine to the genius bar. The gentleman ran tests and confirmed there was something wrong with my brand new 14 Pro Max. It fell 30 percent overnight with basically no usage (on DND and in low power mode). He then told me it would be a couple days. I called today because we are now on day 4 and was told they need more time. I called the Apple Store and they said they are running more diagnostics because they haven't pinpointed what is wrong. This has been a frustrating experience to say the least. My battery health is at 100 percent. I did notice that when I would restart the phone, the battery percentage would fall usually between 3-6 percent from where it was prior to the restart.

Same! I usually unplug my phone after it’s charged to 100% at 4am and go back to bed. When I wake up it’s always at 100%, 99% at the worst… but now when I woke up it was at 88%!!!! I lost 22% with 0 min screen on time and 0 background app usage. Simply unacceptable. I just came back to the iPhone 14 after going android for the last 10 years and this is about to make me switch back …
