External Magic Keyboard Touch ID Not Working

I have a MacBook Pro 16 inch from 2019 and it has Touch ID which works on the laptop. I just purchased a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID but it's not working with the external keyboard. I read online that my MacBook would need to have "Apple Silicon" for the Touch ID on the Magic Keyboard to work with the MacBook. Is that true?
