Connecting iPad to Computer

I need help identifying a cable that will connect my iPad Air (4th generation) to my computer, for the purposes of transferring pictures from iPad to computer. Amazon has sent me a cable that does not work; wrong end for connecting to the iPad. Please, can anyone tell me what I need to purchase?

First, your iPad Air4 does not have a Lightning port - but instead has a USB-C connector. As such, for connecting your iPad Air4 to a computer, any cable with a Lightning connector on either end is of no use whatsoever.

Many recent Windows PC or Mac computers will have one or more USB-C ports like your iPad. For these computers, you can connect your iPad to the computer using the USB-C to USB-C charging/data cable that was provided in the box with your iPad and Power Adapter.

If your computer only has the older (rectangular) USB Type-A ports, as is perhaps very likely to be the case, you simply require a certified USB Type-A to USB-C cable. These are readily available from good computer stores - and from Apple. Apple market a suitable cable manufactured by mophie:

  • mophie USB-A Cable with USB-C Connector (1 m)

For info, Mophie (a respected Zagg brand) also have their own website from where you can order cables and other accessories for your iPad.

You should avoid the use of simple cable adapters - as these are not USB-C certified.

Kindle? iPad?

Now that you can connect the iPad Air with your computer, using the USB Type-A to USB-C cable, you can troubleshoot any other connection issues. If your iPad is not recognised by your Windows PC, this support page should help with identifying the problem:

Rudegar: My new computer has USB ports on the face of the tower.

I have a mophie cable which the box identifies as "USB-A cable with USB-C connector." The terminals fit into the USB port and the iPad, respectively, but no connection is actually made; the computer cannot detect that the Kindle has been connected.

I've also received the Apple Lightning to USB cable from Amazon and the end that should connect to the iPad does not fit.
