Problems opening apps after reverting from Ventura to Monterey

Hi I installed OSX Ventura last week. I am a sound engineer and I noticed my FireWire audio mixer interface did not work any longer so I had to revert to OSX Monterey. Now I can use my audio interface again but a lot of software doesn't work any longer. I have Postbox email client software that will not startup any longer, crashes at startup immediately after clicking the icon. I deleted the app and downloaded an installer, but that installer does also crash while starting. My Adobe software applications all stopped working. They all crash on startup.

What I did to revert from Ventura to Monterey (on mac m1 chip) was:

  1. I had a Time Machine running and backup the latest things.
  2. I created a bootable USB disk with Monterey install.
  3. I wiped the harddisk with a reboot in options with Disk Utility.
  4. I installed OSX Monterey from external USB
  5. Then I migrated my data from Time Machine. My time machine on my Synology DS120j did not work, was unaccessible from migration assistant (which gives me a worry this is totally useless), luckily I had an extra Time Machine volume on external USB disk so I used that to migrate my data back.

So, everything seemed working. Even my browser tabs that were still open were there after reverting back to Monterey. But now a lot of apps don't work. I can't even open installers. What is going on here?

hype1,

In this case we'd suggest trying to start your Mac in safe mode to see if it helps. That should give you some insight on whether one of the startup items on your Mac is causing the issue. Here's how:

"How to use safe mode

Determine whether you're using a Mac with Apple silicon, then follow the appropriate steps:

Apple silicon

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
  3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
  4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

Intel processor

  1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
  3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window."

You can check out the full resource here: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Additionally, you can try signing into a new user account to see if the issue persists across the entire OS or just your user account. If you need to create one you can learn how here: Add a user or group on Mac - Apple Support

We hope this helps.

Take care.

Apple support could not help me. We believe the Time Machine backup that was automatically made in Ventura messes things up when used for data migration after reverting to Monterey.

Advice is to do a clean installation. And then install all software by hand and get the data manually from the Time Machine. It's a horrible thing to experience, as this is tricky and very time-consuming.

Hi hype1,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

We understand that several of your third-party installed apps are not working after reverting your macOS to Monterey.

Start by checking the health of the disk. This will scan for any errors and attempt to fix them. If found disk errors can't be repaired, you will need to erase the disk and reinstall macOS.

Open Disk Utility using Spotlight or from the menu bar and choose Go > Utilities. Continue with additional steps on How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility. Start with the section "Select your disk in Disk Utility".

Regards.
