Background apps exiting OS X 12.5.1 (21G83)

Usually the memory apps like Excel and iMovie: in the background, after awhile, they exit, and need restarted (and in the case of Excel, forget state).

This is a recent change. I have plenty of memory (32GB) and don't even get close to running out (I watch the Activity Monitor).

Is there some setting to stop this behavior?

Hi blackburried,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

From the information provided, it seems that your apps are running out of memory and are closing on their own. If you have already restarted your Mac, run Apple Diagnostics to locate any issues with the hardware of your Mac.

Apple silicon
1. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button as your Mac starts up.
2. Release when you see the startup options window, which includes a gear icon labeled Options.
3. Press Command (⌘)-D on your keyboard.

Intel processor
1. Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold the D key on your keyboard as your Mac starts up.
2. Release when you see a progress bar or you're asked to choose a language.

You can find these steps and additional information in Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac.

If you are provided with any errors, it would be best to resolve the error first. If no issues are found during the diagnostics, additional steps can be found in If an app freezes or quits unexpectedly on Mac.

Regards.

1 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading

3 - Does the issue present in this mode ?

4 - Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

5 - If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.

6 - If the issue is present in the dummy account - then, this appears to be a System Wide issue on the computer.

7 - Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer.

It makes a coherent and readable inventory of both the Hardware and Software used on the computer

The application is free or paid from added features.

The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information.

Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - >>>> using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last ) <<<<

We can have a look at the report for possible issues and may have possible suggestions to resolve the issues.

The User ( you ) can run the Etrecheck Application as a free trial.

Then, post the Full Report as per previous instructions.

But, respect whatever discussion is taken.

An aside , " Q - Background apps exiting OS X 12.5.1 "

The current version of Monterey , as of this writing, is version macOS 12.6.1

There is also a standalone update for Safari to version 16.1

The below links from Apple are worth investigating

The title of the link "if an app freezes or quits unexpectedly on Mac" sounds like it would be helpful, but only goes on to describe how to force-kill an app.

I'm not running out of memory. I have 32GB and am not hitting even close to the limit.

This is really bad in Excel as it's not saving the state, which takes a long time for me to recreate.

It's not crashing: if it were crashing, there is a Microsoft crash app that would appear.
