icloud storage syncing issue

i received an alert on my iphone that my icloud storage is almost full and therefore my phone can't get backed up. I have 200gb used and the majority of that is messages (175.5gb supposedly).

I sorted by top conversations and deleted threads that were multiple GBs, checked back and no difference. Restarted my phone twice, did the latest update - still no impact.

I continued to sort by file size and deleted countless videos, many texts, images etc. my iphone storage is 153gb/256gb. And further, messages are only 7gb (compared to 175gb that icloud is showing me)

How is it possible that my icloud has 50gbs more than my iphone storage?

I've googled this many times and nothing seems to work.

Hi magfabs,

It is possible for your iCloud storage to be larger than your iPhone storage. Some reasons for this are:

  1. Some features such as iCloud Photos have options to optimize storage so that the full resolution of the photo is not on the device and only in iCloud to save device storage Manage your photo and video storage.
  2. If you are backing up other devices withe the same Apple ID, it would take up iCloud storage but not the device storage.
  3. If you use iCloud Drive, some of the files here might be on iCloud and not downloaded to the device if it's not the device the files are from. This is also the case when using Desktop & Documents on a Mac Access and manage your files in iCloud Drive.

When managing your iCloud storage, be sure to completely follow the steps in Manage your iCloud storage to make sure items are permanently deleted.

If it is still not working as expected Contact Apple Support or use this Get Support link for help with your iCloud account.

Take care.

Hi Vero_F1 thanks for your reply. I tried all of those things with no success. Here's what I'm seeing. Youll see the messages appear to be taking up a significant amount of space. One of my 'top conversations' had 100+ gb and i deleted that entire thread a few days ago and now my top conversations are much lower however the icloud+ storage size wasnt impacted at all.
