How to change default “from” address in iOS 16 Mail (iPhone)

I recently switched from domain “old.com” mail to my icloud account mail address. I use the iOS 16 mail app on iPhone. Yet, every single time I compose an email, “me@old.com” appears as the sender/bcc. I even went so far as to delete the old.com accounts from my Mail app settings and everywhere I could find mention of that address in Settings. The old email address doesn’t even work anymore, so if I forget to manually change the address when I send it, my sent email just sits in outbox for hours or days until I wonder why I haven’t heard back on professionally important correspondence.

The “default account” setting seems to have disappeared in ios 16, and I find nothing helpful in the Mail or account settings for this. Google is not helping either.

Sweet Jebus, is this frustrating.

Hello Encarsia Perplexa,

In iOS 16, you can go to Settings > Mail > Default Account to make this adjustment. To clarify, do you now only have one account set up in the Mail app? If so, that may be the reason it does not appear. However, if you removed your previous account, Mail should not be using it to send your emails.

With that being said, this issue could be related to the software. The following steps may help resolve this behavior:

Restart your iPhone. This will allow your iPhone and the software to be refreshed.

" 1. Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.

2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.

3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo."

Update your iPhone. Completing this step often times resolves issues that are related to the software. Be sure to secure your data with a backup before proceeding.

Let us know if the helps.

Best regards.

Thank you. I had already (months ago) deleted the account, but to try your advice, I added a second, unrelated account to get access to the “default account” setting. This showed the now two presently-configured accounts, and I selected the proper one. However, it did not change the default sender when I compose a message—it is still set to address of the deleted account.

Neither resetting nor updating affected that, either.
