Phone call and voice delay

Why is there a delay on some cell phone calls and not others? On some calls I can speak to the person at the same time they speak to me. At other times, when we both try to speak it will cancel out the other person. I have to wait for the other person to finish speaking and then another half second or so before I can reply. Why is their a sporadic problem and what is the fix?Thank you! BTW My noise cancellation setting is off.

Thank you for your response. Yes, your two suggestions have been implemented. However I did not see the technical information about WiFi settings. Yes, I use Wi-Fi often. Wherever I go mostly have Wi-Fi. Only occasionally don’t use it. I always have the phone call issue.

Unfortunately, the call is still not allowing both parties to speak at the same time without a delay and without muting either person. Years and years ago this was a problem, but technology fixed it. Now we’ve got technologies that allow us to have the same problem again. It feels so archaic. It’s not good.

I’d love to get more technical information about how to optimize the Wi-Fi settings.

Hello JenniferLBrowder,

Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. There's a couple of factors that can impact the call quality with your contacts. It can be the surrounding area of your cell phone coverage or that of the recipient's device. If you're using Wi-Fi calling on your iPhone, you'll want to ensure that it is properly configured with your Wi-Fi for optimal performance. Here's how: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support

If you're unsure how to configure these settings for your Wi-Fi network and it's only occurring while using Wi-Fi Calling, you'll want to contact your internet service provider. They have the ability to walk you through these configurations.

Lastly, you'll want to ensure that your iPhone is updated to the latest version of the iOS software. This helps provide software improvements that can help. Here's how:

Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly
1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
The Settings app on iPhone showing options to update to iOS 15.7 or iOS 16.

5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

These steps are outlined here, if you need to reference them: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Kind regards.

Hi JenniferLBrowder,

Thank you for this information.

The first article we provided:  Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support provides the available information about the recommended settings for Wi-Fi.

Are you having these issues with everyone you speak to on the phone or is just one or two callers? If it is just one or two callers, you may want to explore their carriers and/or settings to see if it might be an issue with that and not your phone.

Regards.
