My MacBook Pro (13-inch, late 2011) does not accept CDs or DVDs inserted into the disc drive; the insertion mechanism does not activate.

Welcome!

How far in do the disks go before they stop?

1) Check for another disk in the drive or other obstruction. Shine a light into the drive slot. If you see a disk, see this:

Eject CDs and DVDs from Mac - Apple Support

Note: Some SuperDrives in older Macs had a "safety gate" that deployed if the drive failed, preventing the stacking up of good disks in a bad drive.

If you see a bright metal panel partially blocking the slot, the drive has failed and must be replaced. This drive feature was more commonly found in opticals drives used in iMacs of the period but may have been used in other devices.

2) reset the SMC:

Reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

You can skip down to the section with the sub-heading, "If you don't have a Mac with Apple silicon or the T2 chip."

3) Does the computer operate normally otherwise? If not, please post any other current issues you've encountered.
