Brother HL-3140WC not printing, getting error message "Filter Failed"

Just upgraded from Mac Pro (Mohave) to Mac mini (Ventura) and now my wireless printer doesn't print . It finds the printer ok but when I try to print nothing happens. When I click on the Printer icon in the Dock it shows an error message saying "Filter Failed" and an icon of a failed PDF page even though it wasn't a PDF I was printing.

Any suggestions how I can fix this and get to printing again.

Thanks

Mac mini 2018 or later

Hi,

A Brother HL-3140CW is listed as supported in About AirPrint - Apple Support. An AirPrint-enabled printer is compatible with macOS (13 Ventura), and can be used without an additional driver, provided that the printer and the Mac computer are connected to the same network (Wi-Fi router).

You may have to reset the printing system and re-add the printer to use AirPrint. See the following articles for details:

Reset the printing system on your Mac to solve a problem – Apple Support (UK)

Add a printer to your printer list so you can use it on Mac – Apple Support (UK)

If there is a problem with AirPrint device discovery, you could try the following procedure (in this order, with these waiting times): Power off the Wi-Fi router, the printer, the Mac, and all other connected devices/computers. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the router. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the printer. Wait a minute or two. Power on the Mac. Finally, power on all other devices/computers

It sounds like you may be experiencing an issue with the printer drivers on your Mac mini. I would recommend trying the following steps to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. Make sure that your printer is turned on and connected to the same wireless network as your Mac.
  2. Open the "Printers & Scanners" settings on your Mac. You can do this by clicking on the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen and selecting "System Preferences," then clicking on "Printers & Scanners."
  3. In the "Printers & Scanners" settings, check to see if your printer is listed. If it is not, try adding it by clicking on the "+" button in the bottom left corner of the window and following the on-screen instructions.
  4. Once your printer is listed in the "Printers & Scanners" settings, try printing a test page. You can do this by clicking on your printer in the list, then clicking on the "Options & Supplies" button. In the options window, click on the "Utility" tab and then click on the "Print Test Page" button.
  5. If the test page prints successfully, try printing your document again. If the test page does not print, or if you continue to have issues printing, you may need to update the printer drivers on your Mac.
  6. To update the printer drivers on your Mac, you can try visiting the website of the manufacturer of your printer and downloading the latest drivers for your model. Once you have downloaded the drivers, follow the on-screen instructions to install them on your Mac.
  7. If you are still unable to print after updating the drivers, you may need to contact the manufacturer of your printer for further assistance. They should be able to provide you with additional troubleshooting steps to help you get your printer working again.

I think the first step is to try to figure out what filter failed.

You can enable cups debug logging by entering the following in Terminal:

cupsctl --debug-logging

That will dump more logging into the error_log file in /var/log/cups. Opening that in a text editor and searching for "filter" should provide more info on which filter is failing and why.

Hope this helps.

If you tried all steps in my previous message without success, including the full power-cycle sequence (do not forget the router), the only thing remaining would be to test a printer driver. However, the problem is that the latest printer driver supported by Brother is for macOS 10.15 Catalina. A Catalina driver may or may not work with a newer operating system version, but it would be entirely experimental. In any case, make sure that you have backup copies of all important files before testing anything. Software conflicts cannot be ruled out.
