How to disable auto play music with headphones

Why does my music app start playing randomly when headphones are connected? It doesn’t show as such, but when I open it I can see it is the source and stop it. How can I disable the auto play feature? It sometimes ends up draining power when connected and I am not wearing the headset to realise.

TIA

Thank you - sounds very helpful, but it seems I don’t have the auto play feature as the music on my phone is from my iTunes library, not through an Apple Music subscription. I have two icons - repeat or random. No infinity auto play. And it’s not consistent when it starts. I am usually listening to podcasts and it never selects them. A bit of a mystery. Any further thoughts very welcome!

Hello j00ds,

This is normal when headphones are connected. What may help is to turn off autoplay in the up next queue, which is outlined here: Add music to your queue to play next on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Android device - Apple Support

"Autoplay takes the work out of choosing what to play next. Just play a song, then Autoplay finds similar songs and plays them afterward.

To see your Autoplay queue:

  1. Tap the song that's playing at the bottom of your screen.
  2. In the lower-right corner of your screen, tap Playing Next .
  3. Scroll down to Autoplay.

To turn Autoplay on or off, tap the Autoplay button  in the upper-right corner of your screen. If you turn off Autoplay on one of your devices, then Autoplay is turned off on any device that's signed in with your Apple ID."
