Avoiding part of a route in Apple Maps

I was searching for ways to avoid part of a map in Apple Maps and found that this feature is not available. I was able to find a workaround and I wanted to share it here in case other people find it useful.

While you cannot avoid a specific road or point, you can use "Add a Stop" to manually route around the area you're trying to avoid.

  1. Create a new driving route but do not hit Go
  2. Drop a pin at a point which will force the alternative route.
  3. Add the point to your guides. I have a guide specifically for manual routes.
  4. Select add a stop, the pin will appear at the top of the list.
  5. Make sure to order it correctly so that Maps doesn't try to backtrack.
  6. Press Go

Hope that helps!
